Electrical fault - help/garage needed please - Surrey

Hi,

Does anyone know of a reputable specialist in Surrey / near Woking please?

I had an issue a couple of weeks ago where the lights on the dash stopped functioning (though everything was actually working as it should), the roof stopped responding and the radio went silent - but the car etc ran and worked as normal. Left the car a few hours and all went back to normal.

I drove it this weekend the red airbag light came on and won't go off. I need to get to the bottom of this as the MOT is soon and the usual go-to (TWG Automotive, Camberley, Surrey) is fully booked until the end of the month!

Thanks!

John.

How old is your battery? A weak battery can cause multiple electrical faults :?

Hi,

Yes - I have the old-style (wide) iPod lead but I've never used that - it was in the car when I bought it several years ago.

The battery was new only at the start of this year so I'm hoping it's not that.

I'm just back from the local garage who plugged it in and read the faults as follows (I have never had this done in the 4 or 5 years I've had the car some could be historic):

- Airbag SIM 2.0 (2 errors)
1) 93E7 airbag control unit under voltage and
2) 93C2 self-test (no message)

There were also a couple of other errors relating to:
- Instrument cluster: "87 Body Bus Short to B+", "20 Airbag warning lamp faulty"

and then some other points about the immobiliser and central locking and finally "05 Driver seat temperature - short to ground".

The car is now back to normal with no warning lights, but is this only temporary?!?!?!

Is there anything obvious I should be thinking about having done, or is it best to wait and see what happens and if any faults reoccur?

Thanks,

John.

I had exactly the same symptoms as yours. After many hours disconnecting things and removing fuses I removed the radio and there is an ipod interface unit just below the radio. I unplugged this unit and everything went back to normal and has been fine now for months. This unit was corrupting the canbus circuit which everything else plugs into.

I’ve also had a similar thing on a forum members car where it was the airbag control unit playing up. It’s connected on the K Bus circuit so when it goes down it takes everything with it that’s also on the K Bus.

I had similar if not the same on my e85 and after a bit of searching found some info somewhere pointing to the earth point on the near side inner wing it’s a multiple connection point, removed it cleaned with a wire brush and refitted and never saw the problem again.

Some useful tips there - I hope you can get it sorted, John.

I know what you mean about TWG booking dates - I think I ought to stop recommending them!

Hi,

Some promising pointers so I’ll try and attempt the fixes from James and Stuart - thanks for those.

Bowser134 - if those don’t work is this work that you do - you’ve already done an excellent job with the roof motor and brakes on my car but didn’t know if you also do electrics/fault finding.

Cheers,

John.

Sounds like airbag control module to me. You can maybe disconnect it by removing the coin holder between the seats. You will get airbag light on but it should mean the canbus functions normally again.

Twg automotive in Camberley are a very well reputed indy in Surrey. I've used them for 6 years now, 5 with the 3.0si and one with the M - will is extremely knowledgeable and does a great job.
