Electric Roller Shutter Garage Door Wont Close

Hi all,

We have an electric roller shutter garage door rather large one about 9-12 feet wide that we purchased from the Ideal home show over 10 years ago.

The unit was sold to us by a company called Global who have since gone under.

This unit has always worked well but recently has decided it does not want to close!

It has two photo-cell eyes I believe they are send and receive on either side of the door, these are fixed and do not move.

There is nothing blocking their path.

The door goes up fine and we can manually wind it down.

All the electrics in the control box appear to be functioning fine.

We have tried adjusting the line where the door opens to / closes to no avail.

Below I attach some pictures of the control box and photo cell eyes without their covers on.

Any suggestions anyone can offer would be much appreciated. We dont have anybody we know who could assist with fixing this issue.
 
Easy answer would be to disconect the 'magic eyes' from the system to see if that is the actual root of the problem and then take it from there.
Many systems are operated without these and in most cases are also classed as an add on option.

Hard to tell from the photos (due to the size) which wires would enable you to do this though.
 
Looks to me from the pics like the 'green' photocell is the transmitter and the red is the receiver.

On both sides, test the voltage between the red & black wires - I would guess they should be the same. If so, then it looks like the yellow & blue wires on the red cell side look like they are being used as the switch. Try connecting these together and closing the door, then try disconnecting them & closing. Hopefully, one way should work.

I don't know what voltage is being used, so be careful (though its probably 5 or 12 volts)
 
I have to replace the cells over and over. I am on the fourth set so far I think, they just "die" after a number of years.
 
Having a closer look at the picture of the box with the red light on, I'd say that the normal state for the switch would be 'NC / Normally closed.

So on that basis if you joined the blue and yellow wire together (thus creating an NC state) your door system shouldn't see the fault on the box with the red light on.

Overwhelmed at the advice here thanks so much for your input guys. I really do appreciate it.

I will take a look at this over the weekend when I can give it the time / attention it deserves.

Small update - tested the Voltage readings from red and black getting about 28v on both boxes (I wasnt sure the mm was on the right setting).

I couldnt figure out how to disengage the wires though..

PS not sure I mentioned this but when you click the button to raise the door, it clicks (and raises), when you click it to lower, it clicks (and does nothing) and then there is a 3rd click as well (not sure what for) I think it was the click to try again after a photocell blockage was removed? (which obviously also does nothing presently)
 
Further update - The Yellow wire on the receiver has NC above it and the blue has C above it. I'm guessing these are as "The Moneypit" said Normal Closed and closed.

I managed to unscrew them and wire them together, then tried closing the system but no change.

I then unscrewed the black cable from the cell also and tried again, no change.

The 3 clicks information suggests to me the system certainly thinks the door is not at the closed point at any stage but that there is an obstruction of some form? Although wiring the switch together should have told it that there was no obstruction :headbang:

Ive put it all back together and its all still the same .. any further ideas?
 
Stupid question - but your "hold open" big button in the main unit has not been switched has it?
 
Also, when you select the close, does the LED normally light up?

The exact same as clicking the actual button / remotes for the system..

I cant see the hold open button? I may be the one being stupid..

However the system doesnt hold open if you like it will go up and stop when we click the button say mid-way which is when the next click should be come back down..

So if the system were closed:

Click 1 : Open system
Click 2 : Stop opening
Click 3 : Close system (would not close if there was an obstruction, if so go to click 4)
Click 4 : Close system (tries again after obstruction)
Click 5 : Stop closing

Naturally when it reached the top or bottom it automatically stops based on the set height by an adjuster.
 
I realise its been a long time and apologies for kicking an old thread, but just in case anyone was interested / anyone has this issue in the future, we managed to eventually resolve the problem.

After speaking to numerous providers of electric roller shutter garage doors we got in touch with Lakeside Security who actually bought all the Global stock when they went bust.

They came over and replaced our motor which would not set a limit for the down section at all (chap tried putting a drill in the lower level limiter and it just keep rotating).

Sensors and electrics all fine, new motor and now we finally have a working door again!

Thanks to all for their advice on this matter, I hope this helps someone in the future.
