Eibach coil spring question

Think I've figured out how to upload pics. Now forgive me. The zed is not clean and the wheels are unorthodox and may well offend the purists. Sorry if they do offend anyone. The wheels are from an Italian company Fondmetal. I am thinking of replacing the centre caps with BMW logo caps.

I used my flash to highlight the space in the arches above the wheel which is seen well over the rear wheel. There does seem to be ample space for a 30mm drop.

Comments and criticisms of my taste welcome but go easy on me. At least the wheels are not fluoro- orange rims like I saw on a Focus today.

I actually rather like the rims and I'm one of those who prefers OEM to aftermarket. They sit well with the body colour.

Certainly seems like a drop would benenfit the look, but that's all down to how you feel about speed bumps and how the wheels will sit under flex and articualtion against front arch liners and rear arch upper wheel lip
 
Thanks for the positive comments! I am worried about getting lowering springs as it seems like a biggish expense if things go wrong but the temptation is strong!

Will continue to give this some thought.

Sorry to resurrect this thread! So what is the general concensus. Should I be ok with a 30mm drop with front rims 18x8 ET 40 running 225/40 R18 tyres and the rear rims 18x9 ET45 running 255/35 R18 tyres?

Do I just go for it? Does anyone else out there have any similar specifications who can reassure me.

Surely you have an independent garage in your area? :wink:

Although you might have to seek out somewhere special to check 4 wheel alignment once springs are changed.

Mmmmm, yep you're right, BMW could come over and torch the car :fuelfire: but hey, the centre caps will be genuine BMW :D

You are also right. I should get up off my butt and find an independent garage to do the springs, but do you think a 30mm drop will be ok??
 
Don't know what wheels you had before you changed, but if you use the 18" style 108's as a reference in their recomended fitment of 18x8J ET 47 front and 18x8.5J ET50 rear

then using this link http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp

You can see that your new wheels of 18x8 ET 40 front and 18x9 ET45 rear will cause the front wheels to protude from the car and extra 7mm and the rears an extra 11mm. There is also negliable changes to the inside clearance.

I'm running 19x8.5 ET35 Front and 19x9.5 ET45 which using the same calculator show both the fronts and rears to protude an extra 18mm.

I fitted Eibachs some time ago to my Zed and have experienced some slight rubbing on the front nearside (going over a particularly bad road) and nothing at the rear so judging by the results the calculator gives I would suggest that you will have no problems with rubbing if you fit the Eibachs.

Thanks for this Richard. Your calculations are reassuring to say the least. I'm not after any guarantees but it really does help to draw upon the experience of others.

All that remains now is getting the springs and getting them fitted. Prices for the springs range from £144-150. What do you reckon is a fair price for fitting?

No problems, mine cost nothing to fit, but the 4 wheel alignment afterwards was about £100.

It should take a good garage IMO no more than 1 - 2 hours to fit, but the alignment afterwards is critical, so I guess a ballpark should be £200 max depending on the garages hourly rate. But I stand to be corrected from someone who knows better.

PM Nosa, I think he paid someone to fit his, I know he's in Scotland but it should give you a much clearer idea of the price.
 
I paid £350 but that did include the fitting of 4 sets of Poly bushes as well, Price included alignment, So Richards £200 is in and around what I would expect to be paying fitted with alignment check.
