EGR valve closed or not? (2.2i)

Hey guys,

I have heard that when you close down the EGR valve permanently, your engine would run better and you would have instant hp-increase? :o

Is any of this true? What are the benefits/risks?

I have an E85 2.2i ...

makes sense and i know it is done on the E46. would need a bypass though as im sure the engine management will kick in

edit. just looking and i dont thing zeds have a ERG valve. they use an internal recirculation system

Deleting the EGR from an engine will increase performace etc, but will probably bring a light on as the ECU will want to still recirculate the exhaust gasses so think theres a problem when it cant

Its a well know tuning mod in the VAG Diesel world. A friend of mine deleted his from his 1.9TDI Passat with a kit from ebay at about £80 but then had a remap with the EGR delete programmed in. As far as 1.9 Diesels go it pretty quick!!

Not sure whether kits are available for BMWs though, ive never seen any anyway. Hope this helps :D

From comments read on internet, it seems that the effect is higher for the diesel engines. If I chip my engine I will have a gain of 15hp but I do not know whether it adjusts the EGR valve settings. There should be ways to close the entrance to the valve without bringing a light on by blocking the passage to the valve? Anyway, I am hoping anyone here has tried it on a gasoline fueled Zed...

I'm about 90% sure there is no EGR system on I6 Zed engines. If you do find one, go ahead and block it off and see what happens. Keep us updated.

Obviously, there is benefit to not contaminating intake air with exhaust gases. However, under certain conditions, a non-functioning EGR system can increase the likelihood of pre-detonation. The anti-knock system will detect this and retard the timing. This will have a negative effect on performance, so unless you run higher octane fuel, there sometimes may be little net performance gain.
