ECU warning light and BMW customer service

Hi Folks.

Just wanting your advice.

I contacted my local BMW as i have my oil service due in 7000 plus i had my ECU light come on and off recently, aswell as a vibration grinding noise when pulling off or reversing in the car. They gave me a free health check and said they would take a look at the warning light to for free under the health check.

There report said the car as fine other than condensation in front fog lights but then they said oh there is an oil leak at the back cylinder and also the manifold has gone. I questioned them on the oil leak and he said it wasnt an oil leak but just a large build up of oil around the cylinder. They didnt tell me what the diagnostic test pulled up but just quick to say it needs a new mainfold. However they were not 100% sure and said they neeeded to take it in and strip it down at 85 quid an hour to determine what the cause of the problems was. I also asked how urgent this was and they kind of said no that urgent.

Kind of left not knowing what was going on or what u should do. If i should go to an independent or what.

any advice?

For the ECU, I'd wait for it to come on again. If it turned itself off, what ever it sensed has gone away. For the oil leak, it may be impossible to track down the source until it gets worse, so I'd wait on that as well. For the manifold, if you have a 4 cylinder, it may be failing, which may be the reason the ECU light came on. When it gets bad enough, the ECU light will be back and not go away, so wait again.

As for the vibration/grinding, if you have a manual, it is probably the clutch lining and/or release bearing. Depending on how bothersome it is, I'd either wait or take it to an indy. If you've an auto box, I've no idea what the problem may be.

I don't hear anything urgent here, things will get worse if they're a real problem, so you can procrastinate doing anything if you like. If anything is bothering you, go ahead and take it to an indy and have them take a look.

Cheers

They are proposing to start the strip the car to find the oil leak and look at the manifold. I was just concern the oil leak could cause damage if it was left.

The noise on take off is what made me get the car checked but they said nothing about it. It does sound quite bad when driving off and a bit embarrassing especially when your at petrol stations etc again more concerned that the ginning noise is bad! I might take it to an Indy to check that. Oh and yeah it's a manual.
