I happen to know a lot about the 1.8 and 2.0t VAG engines and the tuning of them so have a pretty good understanding of remaps etc. What I'm curious about is why he should avoid..? Is this company naff..? I mean the figures aren't necessarily untrue (are they??), on most NA engines a 10% increase is the max you could expect on a remap alone but its technically feasible.
 
Its been covered many times before that BMW have got the max outta this engine that is possible. Best bet is just to run on good fuel.

I had my M remapped by Evolve on their rolling road and power went up from 326 bhp to 340 bhp. For me, the improvement in driveability and more linear and consistent throttle response made it a very worthwhile mod. The increase in power is small but definitely noticeable from 5500 rpm to the redline. The 25 bhp that KMS Tuning are quoting for the 3.0si sounds rather far-fetched IMHO.

So many questions...so little cynicism...
  • Was the dyno done on OEM 18's or the CSLs?
  • Are you sure your car was running as it should before you attempted to 'program' your way around the power loss?
  • Was the car removed from the dyno between runs?
  • What were the actual measured whee figures (not the 'calculated' figures)?
  • Did the RPMs at which this peak power raise occur at the same for both peak figures?

I'll try and answer your questions as best I can: -
1. The dyno was done on the CSLs.
2. The car had recently undergone an Inspection 1 and was running well. From trawling through various forums, I have read that the S54B32 very rarely puts out its quoted figure of 338 bhp, if at all, so was happy with the baseline figure of 326 bhp on the CSLs and didn't consider it a power loss as such, as it was around the figures I had seen quoted.
3. The car stayed on the dyno throughout.
4. The figures for the graph I have are for the calculated figures I believe.
5. The figures for peak power occurred at the same rpm before and after, at around 7900 rpm.

My reasoning for the remap was primarily to improve the driveability and consistency of the throttle response, and to try and reduce the DBW throttle lag which I found really rather annoying. I'm happy that the remap has delivered in these areas and the additional bhp is a bonus, really. As I mentioned in my earlier post, the car feels more urgent/faster from around 5500 rpm onwards to the redline, certainly not night and day difference, but noticeable to me. If you have any further questions or critique about the remap, I'll happily answer them if I can.

Thanks for taking the time to answer, most people on here know I'm a remap cynic and just ignore me :P

My reason for asking each of those, was some less well known (along with some of the bigger) tuners can sometimes (usually when they're having an off day) take the pee a little when doing remaps, and I've seen two cars reported with an almost identical 340bhp on one set of rollers and then have a 30bhp difference between the same two cars on a second dyno only a week later - both times the same model dyno and in 'shootout' mode.

The reason for the CSL question was that as they're have a 3% smaller overall circumference (assuming you're running the OEM CSL 265/30 rear tyre sizes), did the operator take that into account in their calculation, or did they simply use the standard correction factor for this car. This will give you more power at the wheels for the same engine power, and by adjusting the correction factor between the two runs to take this into account you could show an easy 10bhp gain.

The reason for the question about staying on the dyno was simply to rule out the old 'loose/tight strapping' ruse.

The reason for asking where the peak figures were recorded is that sometimes the claimed gains are not at the top end and the tuner is simply removing some of the limits the manufacturer built in for the sake of smoothness, or to match a specific VANOS programme, which of course the aftermarket tuner does not remap, so sometimes you end up with more power at the top end, but with odd peaks through the range. I've seen dynos where the print-out claims 320-340bhp at 7900rpm only for the graph to show a 50bhp drop from 7500rpm.

It's just most tuners in the UK claim the S54 engine never made the claimed 338bhp/343DIN that BMW state, so who knows what it's supposed to have :headbang:

Their database also says the e46 M3 (same engine) has 325bhp, so either they're knowingly lying on their brochures, have a dodgy database, or those are the figures on 95RON :P

The 'official' figures in the are 330bhp/343bhp/338bhp for the US/non-US SAE/non-US DIN version.

The BMW website seems to list most models at 15bhp & 15Nm lower than their own brochures :?

most car manufactures under power there cars for reliability an to get the best mpg. 200bhp + isnt a lot for such an engine.
