Economy on a manual 3.0i SE (2003) in stop-start traffic.

Hi,

I have still to pick my car up from the stealer. However, on the way home i began thinking about the MPG i will get out the Zed as its a daily driver..

I do a 44 mile daily commute to and from work. I get on at Junction 10 on the M6 and leave At Junction 6. Its barely 15 miles on the M-way!!!

The tomtom states it should be a 30 minute run. But in stop-start traffic it can easily run to one hour or just over. I would say the commute is 20% A-roads and the rest motorway. A good 20-30 minute is stop-start gridlock traffic.

One of the reasons i bought the car was that it had decent fuel consumption 28-35mpg. Am i too expect low 20's????

I'm coming from an Audi A4 that only needs filling once every 2 weeks!!!!

6 cylinders at idle are always going to use more fuel than a smaller engine for similar rpm. On the positive side if it is that busy you might not be able to use much of the performance. I would expect low to mid twenties for that trip.

You will know soon enough but I wouldn't worry about it. If that was my journey I reckon I would get 24mpg from mine. All depends on what you do on the motorway... I am amazed at how economical mine is compared to other similar engined cars I have had (Alfa 3.0 V6 GTV, Clio 3.0 V6, Boxster S 3.2 flat 6, Noble/Ford 2.5 V6). Noticeably more economical than all of them.

I LOVE how economical my 3.0i is.

Since fitting my MFSW (had to disconnect battery so lost previous mpg figures) which was about 4-5 months ago Ive averaged 29.7mpg. The best bit : I live in a city centre and the only time it spends on dual carriageways/motorways is the odd journey to go shopping in manchester or a day trip somewhere (once every few weeks). The rest of the time is just driven around town and I haven't got the lightest right foot in the world if Im honest. :D

i added a k&n standard replacement air filter and mine seems to do 32.8 mpg now and i do a mix of driving like you do, some motorway and some Crappy traffic. the filter was £30 off eBay new!

i think 28 - 32 is about right, i do alot of short trips, my work is 3 miles a day and i pop home for lunch so 4 trips, and even with occasional heavy foot :D i always get at least 28mpg, this is on a 2.5i, but if im trying to eek out the mpg i can get 31 without to much problem.

so even with the 3.0 and sitting in traffic you should get around 30

No way, stop, starting and in traffic on short journeys in my 3.0i have I ever got anymore than 24mpg (but then maybe thats my right foot being a little heavy :D ), long runs mid 30,s no problem

You'll be looking at low to mid twenties based on my Dec 2006 3.0.

Solid motorway journey I would expect low to mid 30's at reasonable speed (80ish).

I am relatively low mileage driver and can tell you i have done 3775 miles since april, approx 30% motorway/moving A roads, rest if stop start "town" traffic. My average mpg over this time is 25.94 mpg.

I am currently "studying" the effect of moving from standard supermarket petrol to Shell V Power but I am way off being able to provide results. Early indication though is that increase in mpg offsets higher cost but no more. But thats a whole other discussion

What's an mfsw?

Argh ... daily commute into Birmingham limits my 3.0 to 27 - 28 mpg ... just looked at the average mph and it was only 19.3! I'd almost be quicker on my bike!
Longer journeys and motorway cruising gets it up to late 30s mpg ... pretty good all things considered. :driving:
