EBC Turbo Groove Discs

Hi everyone,

It's almost time for me to replace my rear discs - I have no problem with the way the "stock" style ones perform, but I want something that looks a tad more exciting.

I've come across these on Demon Tweeks and they look like a bargain! They do a matching set for the front too. Anyone got any thoughts?

MTEC do some excellent discs in various styles including dimpled and grooved. They are a bit cheaper. I had them with some EBC yellowstuffs, stopped on a dime and made a cool sound when breaking hard 👍

From November 2014 all heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) brake discs and drums (including those for buses and trailers) manufactured and sold across Europe will have to meet the minimum standards outlined in the ECE R90 legislation. From November 2016 these rules will also apply to passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV). In order to meet these standards, the parts must pass a series of tests and perform to levels similar to the Original Equipment part.
If you really MUST read it in its entirety: https://www.unece.org/fileadmin/DAM/trans/main/wp29/wp29regs/R090r3e_01.pdf

I recently got some Ferodo DS Performance pads for the front of my car. Soon I will be needing pads for the rears, I couldn't find suitable DS Performance pads for the rear of my E89 so I contacted Ferodo and they informed me that they did not do a performance version for the rear. He said the standard ones they do called Eco Friction are pretty good but in all honesty he recommended me to stick with OE BMW, he said they just that bit better and he also went onto say that OE BMW are probably better then anything EBC puts out. I know he was referring to the pads but the same logic can be applied to discs? The only other brand he recommended was Pagid.

Will try and have a rummage for some MTEC discs!

Thanks everyone else too! I would go "OE" but honestly I just want something a tad more interesting looking than the stock discs

Both EBC and MTEC are junk.

If just a road car, replace with OE.

Pointless comment if you don't qualify it. Personal experience?
Qualify? Lol didn’t know we had to ‘qualify’ just to post an opinion.

And yes speaking from personal experience.

I fitted drilled and grooved mtecs all round a couple of months ago,no complaints they do a good job

You don't, but it helps if you explain why you think they're 'junk...

Interestingly the regulations prohibit the pads/discs deviating by more that 15% in respect of performance criteria including initial bite, fade resistance and wet weather performance etc. As we know braking is a trade off so if you improve fade resistance you generally give up some initial cold bite, road legal pads or discs that make huge performance claims are therefore shall we say unlikely to true and cheap gear cannot be more than 15% worse in terms of performance than expensive stuff with daft names/colours. But performance isn't everything, things can squeal, some discs wear or warp prematurely and pads can break away from the backing (check-out EBC complaints) or dust like hell, that's when quality comes in to it.

I found out that Textar are an OEM supplier for BMW (Textar are part of TMD who also make Pagid and Mintex)

Jurid are part of Bendix and make after-market OE Quality brakes.

ATE (Part of Continental Tyres) again are after-market OE quality.

These are all top-notch makes and my guess is nobody would be able to tell which was which on the road.

Stop talking nonsense then.

Only one of us talking (unqualified) nonsense...
Yes - you.

This is fun... You've been around here long enough to get the basic concept by now. OP asks a question, people with relevant experience express their opinion and (this is the important bit) provide the reasoning behind that opinion so that the OP can take an informed decision.

Generally, people fall into 2 categories - either they are looking for information and knowledge about their Z4's to enable them to solve problems etc, or they are providing the said information to give the benefit of their experience. As you haven't owned a Z4 for a couple of years, I'd put you in the latter category.

With a two line answer, random photo and arsey attitude, you're doing a sterling job so far....

How many of the comments above give a reason for why they think EBC or MTEC is good or bad?

Also what is the relevance of your point about me not owning a Z4 for 2 years. Have the brake manufacturers altered their products for Z4 during this time period?

The picture is not random either, displayed is a full set of MTEC discs and EBC pads which I put on my personal car. (A complete waste of money).

I already said and will say again (because clearly you aren't getting it) OE BMW is better. Even the chap that works at Ferodo in Silverstar's post has confirmed this.

Stop wasting mine and the OP's time with your bullshit.

I mention the fact that you don't own a Z4 just to make the point that you presumably still come here to share your encyclopedic knowledge?

I simply asked you to explain why you thought they were junk. You still haven't. Instead of being an arsehole and having a pop at me, why don't you contribute something useful?

Look I'll show how easy it is....

I've had MTEC discs on my car for about 3 years. They're fine. I wouldn't say they were any better than OE, but they're no worse. The drilled versions on mine haven't cracked or warped, but then I don't drive the car particularly hard and in my opinion, the benefit is in the looks rather than the performance.

There, it's not hard is it?

No you did not.

You stated the comment was pointless and inferred that I did not 'qualify' - whatever that means.

Perhaps if you had been less 'arsey' in your own approach then I may have been more inclined to provide a full explanation as to why I think they are junk.

Happy to provide an explanation via PM should the OP request.

Had green EBC on a front of our Audi estate and no real difference to standard pads and supposedly make less dust. Nope.
Had black EBC come on a Westfield kit I built . Pedal felt wooden and no real confidence in them Changed for standard Mintex rear and M1144 fronts and pedal was much better and it stopped, albeit a slight squeal when cold.
Had EBC Yellows on an Elise. Was a total death trap. Came of a dual carriageway after a 20 mile run and pressed the pedal. Nothing, nothing at all. Was pressing as hard as I could and somehow after a 150 mtr slip road, was able to 'negotiate' at speed ( probably 40mph) to get round it and was lucky no one was on the roundabout.
Will never give them money again............
