EBC Discs and pads

Hi
I think my discs are coming to an end of their life and am thinking of upgrading to EBC turbo slotted and dimpled discs and green stuff pads. What are your experience with these?

Do they make a big difference on breaking over OEM ?

I fitted EBC EBC Ultimax Sport Discs (USR Series) and greenstuff pads a few months back and am very happy with the results. Prior to that I ran EBC greenstuff on OEM rotors to keep dust down.

Even with the Ultimax there is a brake drone at from certain speeds under certain braking conditions, caused by the slots on the pads, so expect the turbo slotted to be very noisy!!

Performance is imho much better than standard. I have however at the same time upped the disc and caliper size so it's not a fair comparison.

Personally I prefer the greenstuff over the other colours as they perform better on normal road driving, don't squeal and need no heat to work, even though red stuff is suggested for 200hp+ cars.

Hope this helps

Have a search on the board as there are posts on doing upgrades. I did the 3.0 to E46 330 conversion that was just a bolt on of new carriers and calipers. Sent my old carriers to France for shooter to upgrade his 2.5. Since I was buying new discs and pads the costs were minimal.

You should be able to switch to the 3.0i caliper and carrier and then use the larger rotors, but do your research well and consider what wheel size you are running for clearance.

It's a very simple job requiring 2 bolts to take the carrier off, clamp the brake hose, swap over the caliper, bleed any air out and put it back together as you would be anyway for the discs and pads.

Cannot coment on use with a Z4 but i had EBC Turbo grooved discs and greenstuff pads on my last car.

They were nothing special when it came to braking and not good from cold but nothing drastic and they lasted ages plus the dust or lack of it was great especially as i drive Auto so that was a big bonus plus there was no squeal from the pads that i got from my OEM Vauxhall ones.

They are noisy when braking as CJ said it sounded like crickets cherping on mine but not enough to bother me.

Went down this route with my 04 2.5 a few months ago, IRC the 2.2 & the 2.5 share the same brake components, the change of disc's and pads has made an improvment but not really sure it's that much better than OEM on standard sizes for the cost involved.

As Cj has stated if you are looking for a major improvment try going for bigger calpiers & disc's, I tried to find some 330 calipers when doing mine, but 2 weeks of phone calls and half a dozen breaker website searches turned up nothing, have seen a few since but just like Z4 headlights they have shot up in price asthey twigged what people were up to, from 40 -60 quid when I was looking to 80 -100 quid per caliper, then bearing in mind that if you increase the front you will need to increase the rears as on the smaller cars they are solid disc's and vented on the larger to keep the bias the same, you are suddenly looking at about £400 for calipers and the same again in disc's and pads.

my fronts have 3gd rotors (x drilled and slotted) and green stuff pads same size as oems for less than a month, rear is oem rotor and pad.

not much difference in city driving brake feel.

would like to track my car again to see its performance over oem

just a question... is it ok to mix the rotors and pads just like what i did? pros and cons?

and to those who used 3gds(x drilled and slotted), did they easily warp compared to the usr(slotted only)?

thinking of getting usr for my rears, and eventually also the fronts if they do warp earlier than expected

I have seen a significant difference with Brembo Discs and EBC Redstuffs on my 3.0 now properly bedded in. No more brake fade after 5 hard corners!! :)

Ha ha Richard - Seems once these projects hit the market the price rockets.
Cheap clear lens lights and bigger 330 calipers seem rarer.
