Easy fix & what is this for?

Lovely sunny day so took the Zed out, plugged the dashcam in & noticed the 12v charger in the ashtray wasn't working. When I finally got to the fuses (I hate that glovebox system :thumbsdown: ) & put a new fuse in it sparked & blew immediately. I've had trouble with this charger before because if I use certain makes of adapter they immediately blow the fuse (it likes Tom Tom ones) so was a little worried that it was playing up again. Luckily I found the cause quite quickly - a tiny screw had fallen into the 12v charger & was shorting it. But where on earth the screw has come from I have no idea, there is nothing loose or noticeably missing a screw in the vicinity.
Anyway while I was looking I took the ashtray insert out & found that it has a tiny window in one end (pic below) - it must be there for some reason can anyone enlighten me?

 
The ashtray should be illuminated. The light shines through the clear perspex window. Not sure if the bulb is part of the cigarette lighter base unit or not, but it does looks like the bulb could have blown if its not lit.
 
Should be an LED sat behind it on the car side to provide illumination (of your fag butts...) with the side/headlights on.

I'll have to take a look, I don't think mine has ever been working or I've never noticed it :roll: Perhaps I've got too many coins & bits of crap living in my ashtray :oops:
 
I never expected it to be that. I've taken mine apart a few times trying to get my aux sat neatly in there and never noticed a light in there. It's in neater than this now I promise :?

 
But why have the socket in your ashtray? I hated driving around with mine open so I mounted my socket on the drivers side of the console. I drilled it to the size of the thread on the socket, then counter drilled from the outside just larger than the securing nut and fitted the nut which sits just below flush with the surface.
