Not all roads are toll roads, especially from DC south. Florida has some but you definitely don't have to use them. Not sure about Maryland. NC doesn't have any toll roads (yet! grrrrrrrrrrrrrr we already pay enough taxes......).
Not all hotels charge a parking fee, so shop around. Depends on what level accommodations you want.Most in larger cities DO charge.
Wilmington is beautiful. I like it much more than Charleston, SC (have in-laws there so have visited way too often).
Summer will be HOT down south. Look for 85F and up and humidity to make heat indices of close to 100F. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
