Early cat failure-

Hi all,i am thinking of geting a second opinion on my cat problem, does anyone know of any zed that has a cat go under 40000 miles?-i have been advised on here that there may be another underlying problem that has caused the early failure, but thought i would ask,i thought these cars were bulletproof apart from the usual roof motor, springs etc,but if i fork out to sort this out it will mean she has had £3000 worth of repair work in the 18 months i have owned her :(

MIne did 56K in 8 years and no problems.... hang on, there are 2 sets of cats.

1. on the manifold
2. in the exhaust pipe

which ones shave failed and how do you know they have failed?

Andy I'm really sorry to hear the problems you've had with your car.

I've heard of CATs going for a number of reasons. My mate is a mechanic and used to do contract work for fleet car companies. He's seen CATs go at 12k etc. Usually its down to rapid cooling of the CAT which leads to reduced effectiveness of the internal catalsyts, this can be down to water imersion (splashing through deep puddles is one example) etc.

I had a CAT go on my *ahem* Saxo when I was 19. It had done 60k and was £350 to replace :(

I think you've been unlucky Andy. I dont think its a more serious sign of the car being badly maintained. Just unlucky....

Cheers guys, the reason for my second opinion is that my indy has been using a bmw process of elimination, replace manifold first, the two 02 sensors next ,then according to my indy because i have no leaks anywhere it has to be the cat.Another indy tells me they do not do that- they can diagnose and pinpoint the exact cause of the light coming on.
So im in a quandry really,i cant take the zed to second indy as the light has been turned off for now,and its illegal to source a breakers one,i can see a 3 series looming.

Have you been up to Bev Motorworks? Top lads and will NOT give you the run around changing parts etc.

I'm going up next weekend (if I book the car in  ) to get the full control arms, drop links etc fitted.

Good honest garage, BMW speacialists.

Take her for a hoon - you'll have a blast, remember why you lover her, and then when the light comes on take her to your second Indy

I know its extremely annoying Andy with all the problems your having with your zed,try and just enjoy it and if the emission light comes back on get another indy to take alook

I dont think its easy to define early. Parts fail, for many reasons, but some may fail when considered to be almost new, for one reason or another.

Well i have read up on cats via google, and the tell tale signs of a bad cat are, rattling, louder noise, bad smell, lack of power,my zed shows none of these signs,im just wondering if i have been turned upside down by my indy?

Im still waiting for the light to come back on  -im going to take her to the stealers, they have told me they can guarantee to find the problem within half an hour-hmmmmm?

I had (what sounds like) the same issue in October 2011. I had the engine warning light & the local dealership checked it out and said the cat was failing due to a build up of deposits on it (stop and start driving 3 miles to work0 and I had two options - replace the cat @ €1200 or try a fuel additive (BG 44K) to clean the cat @ €25 a can.

It took two cans (one per fill of the fuel tank) and 30-40 miles of driving with the engine steady at 4000 - 4500rpm (helps to get the cat up to temp apparently) and I haven't seen the light since. My Zed is a 2005 2.0 with 48,500 miles on the clock and had about 41,400 miles when I got the warning light.
