Early Blast on the South Downs

It was so nice today that I decided to make the most of being unable to sleep past 5am and pop out for an early drive before the traffic got heavy. Had a nice swoop across Devil's Dyke and down the Saddlescombe road, cut east towards Pycombe, took the back way into Ditchling and blasted up the climb to Ditchling Beacon - a lovely tight twisty hill road with some sharp changes in pitch left over from the old horse & cart resting spots where you can feel the car squirm under you as it lifts, goes light, and then settles and grips again

Came home via a short stint on the A27, then cut north towards Upper Beeding, Steyning and Washington on some nice Sussex country roads and then back down the A24. Certainly blew away the morning cobwebs 8)

Views across to misty Mid-Sussex from the top of the beacon

Sounds like you have a route we could ask follow
It's at it's best when there's no traffic i.e. early morning - if you're unlucky on the country roads you can end up crawling behind tractors for miles...

Nice write up. Sounds like my kind of driving heaven. 8) :driving: Will hopfuly be doing some thing very similar, around Cornwall, tommorow morning. :D

Great post Perry
I'm about to create a sudden need for milk so I can take a quick blast out somewhere.

Early morning solo hooning, especially on days like today, is always a rewarding experience - looks lovely Perry, that's a great photo

Didn't make it further than Welling! Realised flip flops aren't the best driving footwear! Did see a few 'ModBall Rally' stickered cars out and about though. Anyone else?

OK, I'm always up around 5am so PM me your phone numbers and, next time the weather's nice and I fancy an impromptu early morning blast through the South Downs, I'll make sure you get a 5:15am alarm call....

That's my neck of the woods, some good roads usually marred by people scarred to go above 40mph.

I love the small section from woods mill to Woodmancote and the devil's dyke road is fun too.
