There’s a manual 35i m sport in Exeter on autotrader. Probably not a black roof, (it doesn’t show the roof)

‘good engine’ suggests a straight-6-pot and I don’t think they came in VO… now that will throw a grenade into the 4-pot turbo pit
Well the one in the link is a 35i so while it is a straight 6 it's the N54, which does have a reputation for one or two common problems. Maybe that's another grenade thrown?
But I'm not sure VO was an option on 23i and 30i models so a turbo or two may be the price the OP will have to pay for the colour.

I think VO was introduced at facelift time (2013), so the N52s were gone by then.
So you have a choice of two engines: the N20 (18i, 20i and 28i) which is good but not great. Or the N54 (35i and 35is) which is great but definitely not always good.
I can't help but wonder what happened to Sean's (@N4LLY's) VO car. God rest him!

Thanks for looking for me, I don’t think I’ve found my perfect Zed yet, although the 3 litre comes close. Please keep looking for me, I know my perfect E89 is out there.
Looked again at the VO Z4 shown in the link above, it’s in Exeter which is a bit of a stretch for me but tempted to go and see it. What issues might the engine have? Does anyone know this car.
The N54 is a great engine but it can be a very expensive mistress, as if (or when) things go wrong they tend to be expensive things; like turbos, fuel pumps, injectors, etc. And don't be too comforted by the lowish mileage; I had an N54 which had 2 new turbos, HPFP, injectors, coil packs by the time it had done 36k. Luckily I didn't pay for any of it but someone did.
That car is expensive IMHO but it is a manual 35i in VO which must be a very rare combo; most N54-engined E89s are that horrible 7 speed DCT auto (horrible IMO obviously).
