E89 woes!

Hey all, I am looking for inspiration on where to go next with the troubleshooting for my lad's 35iS. Its a 2010 with 85k miles and we have been having troubles since November 2025.

Boost issues back then, and have since changed both sensors. So no further issues with this. As he doesnt use the car very often, the battery has run down, and I know this causes a load of issues with the various systems. Back in November, during trouble shooting for the boost issue I finally fugured out how to turn off the brake wear indicator light after changing the front pads and discs a few months previously. But as a result of this CBS reset, the EMF Handbrakke system started playing up. It was stuck on, and only able to be activated by resetting the faults using my Foxwell 710 ODS. (the roof is also U/S but that is for another thread and another day).

This EMF fault kept appearing and was triggered both in the activated and deactivated state. MOT was due in February so I started to get everything ready for this. Took for a quick spin around the block, and the L/H front spring failed! Good old Welsh valley roads...

So, having recently changed the front springs, went to get an MOT booked, and now have the same intermittent fault with the handbrake system. Today (26th March) disconnected the battery, unseated, cleaned and reseated the plugs / connections at the handbrake units, cleaned the contacts with electrical cleaner.

Reconnected the battery, started up and EMF fault is still present. Could not clear the faults no matter what I tried. (Handbrake is currently in the "Off" / deactivated position). The new issue is that there are now a load of K-Can faults. (See Foxwell reader report attached). I am ignoring the A69C fault for the roof as I think its a wiring harness issue as I have switched all three valves, and the fault doesnt transfer from one to another, suggesting it is not a valve fault.

I have managed to reset the handbrake a few times today, getting it to activate and deactivate a few times, but the fault is still there. I have reset as many of the Control units I can, whether or not a fault was listed. Turn off car, turned on. took for a quick spin and back. Retested, EMF now stuck in the on position. Did same things again, and eventually managed to get EMF to deactivate, so left it off, and I am now able to drive it. Turned everything off before the fault could set again (as in the previous few attempts, the fault came back after around 30 seconds to a minute while idling). No change to the K-Can faults though so think something may have shorted / fuse issue since removing and reconnecting the battery earlier today.? but not convinced so looking for help. Thes faults have no impact on driving or starting however so a bit confusing for me not having had to troubleshoot the K-Can system before on any cars I have owned.

Open to anyone's ideas on where to go next. I have ISTA+ installed on this laptop but having connection issues with the OBD lead. Will get my lad to take another look at the software to see where we can fix it and then maybe try again with the ISTA+. I have read that the EMF control unit is troublesome and needs to be recoded if these types of issues are seen. But too much info on the web for this number of K-Can Faults.

At a glance I am seeing:

K-Can related fault codes:

D904 present CAS: K-CAN line fault
C908 present JBE: K-CAN line fault
E2C4 present CON: K-CAN line fault
D204 present CTM: K-CAN Line fault
C944 present MRS: K-CAN line fault
E444 present SMFA: K-CAN line fault
E584 present FRM: K-CAN Line fault
D944 present DWA: K-CAN line fault
E71D present Message error (status PDC, 0x24A), receiver integrated automatic heating / air conditioning system, transmitter PDC (This one has been there for a few years. It clears then comes back)
A56A not present No message (status, EMF request, 0x1FD), receiver KOMBI, transmitter EMF
E1C4 present RAD / CIC / CHAMP: K-CAN line fault

Handbrake: (These are the two fault codes I typcally cant clear, but are now not there as I have managed to clear them at last go).

6037 present Parking brake servomotor left: Voltage supply
6038 present Parking brake servomotor right: Voltage supply

E1E9 present CIC: failure of front display monitor (Aftermarket unit fitted so this is not an issue)

Cheers all.
Simon.

So something is shitting on the databus..sadly without a 5th Dan in bus diagnostics you're stuck...usually its down to a module dying / dead

It maybe that the EPB module is now corrupted due to battery voltage failure..

So IMHO its either a new known good EPB module or a EPB module reflash then take it from there..

As said, it looks like one of the modules has died, as these cars get older it seems they are even more prone to voltage spikes/drops, I’d suspect one of the modules in your list is the culprit, unfortunately as they are all connected I don’t think even disconnecting them one by one will help, although it’s always worth a try.

Try cleaning the contacts on the EPB. It sits on the right hand side in the boot. If water has been in there it can cause problems. I had a very similar issue on my first E89. I was lucky it just needed drying and contacts cleaning.

Could be the ebrake motor. I had one water got in, rusted and it failed.
Obd threw up a voltage fault code.
If you fit new, only £25-30 each, bung some grease in to waterproof.
