E89 Windscreen Washers

Just had to take the washer reservoir out as the washers has virtually stopped working, I found the little mesh filter was completely blocked which was strange as the headlight one was fine, its a bit of a faff trying to get it out but reasonably easy. I understand this can be caused by mixing BMW and other brand mixtures which is exactly what I had done.

I have this issue with mine and my dealer wanted £45 to unblock the filter (and £60 to supply and fit a new H8 bulb) both of which I politely declined... any tips for the reservoir and filter? Any form of guide you may have used or is it fairly straight forward?

Fairly easy..just a blade down the back of the reservoir to push a clip in and then pinch the two clips in the locator at the front, I found it easier to pull the 2 motors out after removing there electrical connectors first. Just be aware the water hoses have little clips which you have to retract to dissengage the hose and be careful of the level sensor underneath as the wire is quite short and if you yank the tank out it may pull a wire out so tip the front up and you should be able to gain access and then disconnect. To clean the filters its just a matter of forcing the grommets out of their holes, I used some rat nosed pliers to get either side and just levered them out. Washed the filters under a running tap and used a cocktail stick to get all the gunk out.

Well us BT types used to call them 81's which I think it was because the GPO called them AT1's which I think stood for something

I had blocked washers which stopped the headlamp washers working but that was due to a tissue being dropped into the tank at the dealership. Not happy but me and my dad got a couple of chopsticks to dislodged the gunked up hanky from around the filter and then siphoned off the water, repeating the process a few times. The following day after about 10 attempts all washer jets started working. I now like to check it regularly to make sure the filters look like they are fine.

I also filled the tank just enough with just undiluted wash, left it a day with a wee drive about to try and help dislodge any gunk, then topped with water and tried the jets.

Well I initially tried a kettle of boiling water as mine worked but only hit the bottom if the screen, anyway the boiling water had the opposite effect and they stopped altogether I presume it just consolidated the gunk around the filter

Never had this problem with any other car (non BMW) but am now waiting for my E89 to develop it.
Why is it a problem with BMW and is it just the E89?

As I said I think its mixing BMW mixture with non BMW it's quite well known on other forums which is where I found it

Maybe flush out with clean water before using anything else ?

Is this possibly more of a problem in cars that are not used much where the screen wash is degrading and clogging the filter?

Only ever experienced it with BMWs but it's not exclusive to the E89 - my E46 330d had the same problem as did my ex's X3 (can't remember the nomenclature for that one - the LCI first gen X3 ;-) )

Topped up my washer bottle today. First time I've taken any notice what's floating in there.

Surprised to see it looked like a snow globe. Lots of bits floating around like dried milk. And black stuff at the bottom.

Job for next week, strip out and clean and I think some good quality fluid as I think part of the problem is how long it takes for that quantity of fluid to cycle through.

Makes me wonder if best to use some cheap deionised water in the mix. Probably where premix wins out, as who knows what is in tap water.
