E89 Tyres profile upgrade

Hi All,

It is time for me to change my tyres now and get rid of the RF , atm I am running 225/35 19 Front & 255/30 19 Rear.

I have been advised by mrwilks and other members (who probably have the answer to my question) to go up in profile so instead of the 30 and 35 I was looking for 255/35 rear and 225/40 front.

I have decided to go for the goodyears F1 but unfortunately they don't do the 225/40 in NON-Runflats

Now my question is: can I keep the front on 225/35/19 and upgrade the rears to 255/35/19 ?

I would keep the front and rear as close as possible. If you are adding another 5% in rolling radius to a single axle then you will cause confusion with the cars stability and traction control.

Adding 5% to each axle is fine as the car just thinks it's moving slower rather than thinking the rear wheels are moving faster than the front.

Bugger , the other 2 Goodyear listed were specified as RF he ones i linked were not . You could always consider Hankooks

Here's the best option IMO although it may upset the Hairdresser set. On the other hand, these tires will protect your wheels while giving you a much smoother ride and Boxster level handling.

Those tyres are way too big for standard wheels. There's no way in hell you are going to keep up with a Boxster on a twisty road with properly fitting tyres let alone mismatched junk :lol:

Sorry, but you are incorrect. They are not "too big for standard wheels." I spoke directly to Continental after reviewing their wheel tire fitments (which shows these tires do in fact work perfectly fine on these size wheels) and they confirmed the sizes work just fine. Now, I've driven my car back and forth at speed on Mullholland Drive here in Los Angeles and I can tell you this car, set up the way it is now, is as fast as you'll want to drive on a roadway open to the public. A Z4 with a tuned N54 motor make substantially more hp and far more torque than even a 3.8 Boxster Spyder (which I have driven in the canyons as well) so even if it did give up a little bit in the corners it powers out a lot faster and is faster on the straights. Since you speak with expertise, have you driven a Z4 with this setup to substantiate your opinion as have I?

I have a tuned N54 with 275/30r19 on a 9.5j rear and 235/35r19 on a 8.5j front. It still won't handle better than a Boxster and that's with a larger contact patch and higher performance tyres than you are using.

A Boxster is a sports car, the Z4 is more of a GT. You need something more than fatter sidewalls to keep up with a porky.

UPDATE !!

I have finally changed my tyres and upgraded the profile going by advice from this forum :x

I went for the Kumhos front: 225/40/19 rear 255/35/19. £377 from TyreLeadyer and not a bad deal at all !!

Unfortunate, when steering to the left, the front OS Tyre rubs against the inside plastic panel. there is a kind of plastic grill.

And to be fair it didn't make much of a difference compared to the RFTs, though it is still early stages to notice any difference.
Getting of the RFTs made a huge difference on my previous e85 but I never complained about the e89.

The rubbing is minimal to be honest but it is annoying when locking the steering wheel to the the left.

I guess I will be few quids down getting a new set of tyres now, the Kumhos will be up for sale

Don't know if it helps but mine is running 265/30/19 rears and 235/35/19 fronts.

I haven't had the car long but I haven't noticed any rubbing on the arches at all. They also fit and look perfect on the wheels.

Valor1, yours is a standard suspension and you might not have rubbing but OP's one is M Sport which is 10mm lower and the 245/35R19 fronts and 275/35R19 rears would most definitely not fit at all.

I've asked a similar question not long ago in here - http://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=95831&p=1441118#p1441118 and also on the US E89 zpost and from replies the best you can get away with on the standard 19 inch wheels (8J front and 9J rear) are:
Standard suspension - max 235/40R19 front + 265/35R19 rear which is used by only a few in the US as you get slight rubbing when you take a passenger
M Sport suspension - max 235/35R19 front + 265/30R19 rear

At the end I went for Vredestein Ultrac Vorti - 235/35R19 front and 265/30R19 rear hoping to get slightly softer ride and a little bit more front end grip and most importantly to get rid of the horrible run-flat Bridgestone Potenza RE050A which cost me one cracked rear alloy already.

I'm using 275/30r19 on a 9.5j rear and 235/35r19 on a 8.5j front and my car has the adaptive suspension which makes it lower and I have no rubbing issues.

To be honest the rubbing is minimal, I have decided to keep them on as the ride is much more comfy now.

Are you sure you going for a 35 profile on both front & rear ?? I wanted to do the same and was advised against it -Apparently it would confuse your traction control.

I'm going up to 235 wide on the front, so keeping the profile the same will still increase it due to the width being more.

My uncles e46 M3 is running 235/35 and 255/35 so all will be well. I just hope it looks good!

Just had them fitted, only driven 5 miles but feels a lot different already! So much more comfortable.

I went for Uniroyal Rainsport 3's in 235/35 19 and 255/35 19... it looks some much better as well. The rubber bands on the rear looked stupid in my opinion and he 225 fronts looked almost stretched.

It seems to sit nicer as well, I'm definitely interested in some Eibach springs now as I'm not worried about making it too harsh.
