E89 Terrible Seats

Is it just me....

The seats on the Z4 are horrendous as far as comfort goes. This is my second Z4 35is and there both identical, no lumbar support and set really low. I drove for 5 hours today on a return journey and my right leg, when i arrived and then returned was numb with pins and needles.

I am replacing the seats with something very similar to these. I went and sized the seats today in the car and they look fantastic. I will update with pictures when they arrive.

I love my seats but I admit my sciatica hates them on long runs. Those seats look fantastic, I hope they're more comfy than they look tho.
 
I hate mine too , zero support although I have the SE version , they are flat as a pancake comfort wise very disappointing

Id be interested in aftermarket seats but would still want to keep the side airbags
 
The standard seats are awful but I find the sports seats very comfortable. Never felt uncomfortable driving long distances in my e89.
 
Are the sports seats with the squarer headrest, as I have those and were told they were sport, but no lumber, just the side adjusts.
Have always found them comfortable.
Are the non sport the rounder headrest type.
 
Yep correct on all fronts, the side adjust I didn't even realise was there till I chanced upon it a week or two after buying the car. I do find it odd there is no lumbar support I can't imagine it's a tricky thing to add, especially when at the top end people were dropping £50k+ on these cars
 
Unfortunately the lumbar support is not standard, it's an option, and I get the impression that not many cars have it fitted.
I have to say that I don't find the sport seats uncomfortable, have done a few long journeys with no adverse effects.

OP have you found the extra adjustable support that pulls out to the knee backs? This definitely helps with supporting the backs of the thighs. It's the same thing as you get with aircraft seats, the calfs rest on the aircraft seat edge thus causing a constriction of blood flow which will bring on pins and needles, the same as the thighs resting on a car seat edge, so if you pull out the thigh adjuster on the M sport seats it'll support the whole thigh up to the knee backs instead of approx 3/4 of the thigh. As said lumbar seems a very rare option taken up, I forgot it and was too late to have it added to my car when I'd remembered it.
 
I have the adjustable lumbar support and it is quite good, I have lower back pain quite regularly so it was an important option to wait for when I was looking for my car. The seat back pad gets pumped with air at the press of a button to the level required and the air pad can be moved vertically to the most comfortable position. The side bolsters operate in a similar way.
 
By using / adjusting the thigh support, lumbar support, the backrest width, seat height and angle, my seat is very comfortable with seat heating to add to the comfort when needed. In fact it has more adjustments than most other cars that I have owned or driven.
 
As with many BMWs you might find its simply down to the pedals being slightly offset which means you're sitting slightly twisted, I'm unsure if replacement seats will fare any better. I've found with all the BMWs I've driven except the Z3 a slightly offset position but after a while of adjustment a decent position is usually found but it takes time.

Do those replacement seats have airbags?

No no airbags.

I also have an F Type Jaguar V8s and the seats Im going for are almost identical, the difference in comfort is immediate. I can drive the F Type for hours and comfort does not even cross your mind yet the Z4 is a different story. I put one in the passenger space yesterday as a mock up and instant result, plus to be honest they will look far superior. The Z4 seats are strange looking things.
 
Just to say the sport seats are the most comfortable car seats I have had the pleasure to spend many an hour in. For nearly 2 weeks now sitting has been very uncomfortable ( you do not need to know any more detail ), but a 4 1/2 hour journey in the Z , :) did not make it any worse. God forbid I would've been Audi .
 
Well after a few weeks of ownership of my E89 i have no complaints about the seat comfort with sport seats, but then my E85 with non sport seats is also very comfortable. I wish both had lumbar support but for me neither is an issue.
