E89 Start-Stop

never been a fan of start/stop, had it on a few cars. If you ever need to change a battery or starter motor you will likely need a loan to afford it...

After my E85 Z4, I bought a very nice F21 118i remapped by Schnitzer and with all the interior/exterior BMW Performance parts.
Is auto box along with the Start/Stop function made me sell it just a year after initially getting it.

You can turn the stop/start function off with Carly :?

tsk tsk Smartbear..pay attention..when the ZF 8HP45 was revised post initial N20 launch, a stop start variant came out with an accumalator to allow auto start stop operations..

I’m trying :( , when did the accumulator version come out? Steve on here has a 2014 28i without stop/start? :?
Rob

Not sure real oem suggests post April 2014..

I have a 2014 20i Msport. I just switched it off once, it's never come back on :?

That must have been coded like that with Carly or similar, the default function is always to be active when starting the car even if it had been turned off previously.

It is cited, anecdotally as a contrbuting factor to the N20 cam chaim /oil pump drive chain demises..most engine designs never inagined starting stopping the engines 100,000s of time..the 'jerk' on the chains helps contribute to the chains /tensioners /guides demise..

It's possibly a factor - I had a 123d with the N47 engine and stop/start for over 6 years and some of them had cam-chain issues too.

Mine outlasted my ownership, but I did have to replace the (expensive) AGM battery after just over 4 years, and the starter motor only lasted 6 years. I'd be amazed if stop/start didn't have a part to play in their demise. :(

If I had another car with it I'd get it coded permanently off!

Part of my cockpit drills, hitting that pesky button.
Would be easier to get it coded I know, but now it's just become a habit and I hardly notice I'm doing it.

Is start/stop for emissions, gets into certain co bracket for tax purposes.

It helps the city /urban fuel consumption / CO2 figures a lot whcih is why its fitted to all modern IC cars..

I think car manufacturers are putting it mainly to conform to legislations regarding emissions. I certainly didn't see any difference in fuel consumption on my 2016 F20 118d and as you say it will likely end up costing you more for mechanical issues.

Mine is a September 2009 2.3i and it does not have stop start. It has a start button and a slot into which the key goes and thats it

The 2014 MY N20s with manual greabox were the first Z4s to have start /stop as standard

Looks like it never was implemented on the ZF 8 speed auto..

Well all I can do is point out the last ever 2016 MY BMW Z brochure printed and it says on page 36.. Auto Start-Stop is not available with Automatic transmission models.. :driving:

So whilst ZF did upgrade the box looks like BMW never used it on the E89..it is used on the G29..

humble apologies :tumbleweed:
