e89 Smart Top

Get your daughter to honeymoon in the states and bring one back for you as a thank you then

Just uninstalled mine in preparation for a trade-in... took all of 20 minutes from start to finish. It's maybe an extra 10 when you fit it, absolute doddle since they introduced the in-line connectors. The programming from the indicator stalk is also easy, you just need to read the instructions!

Ahhhh
The Engineer's motto:
When all else fails, read the instructions :)

I agree the programming isn't complicated but I don't find it very intuitive.
Installation/de-installation is straightforward.
For anyone doing their first fit, make sure the connectors are fully seated and do a dry run before stowing the loom away and refitting the trim

I must get one of these. It's rained too many times when I've left the roof down.
You look like a complete berk rushing out to put the lid back on and getting soaked!
In which case Ron I have an unfair advantage
I look like a berk anyway

Why someone doesn't do a roof module with a rain detector I don't know. Then you could leave your roof down and it comes up on its own when it rains.

You'd also need to make sure that the car was only doing less than 30mph. I'm sure if this kicked in at 70mph it would cause not only mechanical issues with the roof but possibly accidents.

Currently the roof can only be operated under 30mpg This is due to the pressure put onto the roof and motor whilst moving. This was changed in the facelift E89 hence why it now can be manoeuvred whilst moving at lower speeds, the pre facelift versions don't have this and therefore if you have a smarttop fitted and use it whilst moving you may bugger the roof motor as it's not designed to be used whilst the car is moving.

I'm guessing 'Mr Shanahan' means when the vehicle is parked on your drive.
I've had previous convertibles with soggy interiors as I have parked them up in the afternoon, with the roof down, only to forget when a sudden shower comes along.
Think rain sensitive roof closing when stationary is a great if slightly none h&s idea.

Sorry to hi-jack this post, but on our car the default setting of the air con/heater is on. Meaning my wife keeps riding around with the roof down and the air con working overtime. Can the default setting be reversed?

Ah yes, re reading it that makes sense, that however would still require an element of the car to be active and causing a drain on the battery but yes it would be good for those who like to leave their roof down for long periods of time whilst they are not using it. I prefer to leave the roof down only if I'm just popping into the house etc, I wouldn't leave it down for hours on end.

My aircon goes off when the roof goes down but back on when the roof comes back up. I ensured the first time I put the roof down with the aircon on I switched it off and then back on when the roof came back up. I assume it's remembered these settings on my key as it's supposed to. Not sure if there is anything else via the idrive system.
