e89 Ski Carry System

Thank you to [ref]Frankie169[/ref] for the smooth swap of my bulkhead shelf for his ski carry system. A great example of this forum in action. Swap thread: https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=114124

I finally got some time today to test it out with my Skis. Some pictures below for those that are interested in how the ski carry system works.

The system clips into the bulkhead hole where the shelf unit used to reside. The square cover you can see unclips and folds down when you want to pass ski's through. The ski hold bar for the rear is seen stored underneath using the velcro straps that are present in all e89's.

Ski Bag now present when you pull down the bulkhead catch. It has a strap to keep it tidy when not in use.

You need to remove these square covers in the rear boot to clip the ski holder into place

The ski holder bar clips into place as shown below

The skis then sit on this and you use the rubber straps on the bar to hold the skis in position. You can carry two pairs, but I have split one pair for example

You can still put the cover down for the soft-top with the skis in position. So you can cruise to the slopes roof down and then surprise your fellow skiers when you produce your skis from the boot.

Looking forward to testing it for real next year if we get some snow in Scotland for skiing!

It amazes me why someone at BMW picked skiing as the sport to adapt the Z4 for.
Looks a good system but looks like it kills the little space you have in the boot to start with.

Possibly the one & only time the load through ski bag feature has ever been used for its intention :D
I had it on previous 35i , totally pointless for me & i suspect 99% of other owners .
They would have been better offering a plug in kettle for the boot to make a brew mid hoon :D

Really unusual option to offer on a Z4 - maybe someone on the design team was a keen skier!

Still it's good to see someone will actually use it.

A bit like having an ashtray on a motorbike I suppose.
Someone will find it useful 😳

Do have a ski slope not far away from where I'm living. Using the ski carrying system several times during the vinter - just brilliant :D

When I lived near a major ski resort it would have been great. The road salt spray on an external rack is not good for the skis. For that matter I do not believe I would drive the car in road salt slush either. All that salt comes inside on your boots and melts.
I am impressed that the designers tried to make the car as practical as possible utilizing all the nooks and crannies.

Did not know the shelf simply just unclips. Cool, now i can get my fishing rods in
without bending through the passenger side and carry a passenger at the same time.
Neat, good thinking the guy's at BMW :)

I had searched the forum and google and I could find no pictorial evidence of this system in use, so thought it would be good to put some pictures out there of it in action.

It comes in handy - Before getting the system I was just removing the shelving unit and passing my ski bag though the hole, but I liked the idea of having the bar to stop them moving around

Remember BMW HQ is in Munich where it is very popular to go skiing to the alps at the weekend.
