E89 security fix - any updates?

Had mine done last Friday, Chandlers Worthing, same as above no issues at all, car was suitably filthy when i took it in (hadnt cleaned it since the Surrey meet) and i left with it shiney and clean. took about 1hr

Great Dealers my two are in tomorrow

Had mine done yesterday.. all good and a clean car...

anyone know Exactly what they have done ? is it software + a new bit of hardware ??

Few theories kicking around... from reading online it seems for definite that they've altered the software to a) set something to prevent a new key being made without an existing key in the slot and b) possible enhanced encryption to prevent non BMW tech from using a lot of the ODB support. Someone posted the exact ins and outs on the 1M forum.

Now there's a smart move if ever I've heard one! :x

Its giving them a head start.

I was just thinking the same!!

Will have to get mine booked in soon. Anyone used Elms Stansted for this?

Booked in to have the fix applied tomorrow - no quibble, no questions. Did it directly via the dealer as the car is going in for a few other things.

Pfft... part of the new 'security fix' is to disable opening and lowering the top via the physical mini key in the car door lock. Just tried it on mine now the car has been updated and yup, I can no longer put the top up with the key. Grr.. That was handy not having to enter the car when opening and closing the top for cleaning etc.

I've just bought a spare key at £28 to hang in the garage! :x

Getting in and out of the car with the roof down is quite important to me due to some restriction of mobility in my leg - I would be ok if fob operation was a possibility.

I suppose we've got the health and safety police to thank for that!

Ronk,

If you have the update, speak with the dealer as the option to use the door lock may be reversible (enabled again). Seems they disabled this as it was being abused by the thieves. They used it to lower the roof/open windows, which also removed the alarm, then they could get in quietly to connect up the kit to make the keys.

It seems we are caught between a rock and a hard place!

Lowering the roof is a great help to me with my dodgy right leg. I can get into the car but have to haul my right leg in after I'm sat down. Its not a show stopper but a vertical slide down into the seat is much easier. However if its going to comprimise security I will live with it.

Better to be awkward to get in or out than to have to walk home!

The key in the door lock never opened my roof etc, but as a 2012 car I guess mine came with the "fix" already applied.

Looks like I will have to live with it! There are plenty worse things. :)

I can always reach into the car, bung the key fob in and press the button. When I go for the fix, I will explain my predicament to my dealer and see what suggestions he has.

It would be nice to have it operate from a fob press wouldnt it?

Fit a smart top, job done, problem solved! :D

It annoys me that the electronics and mechanism already exist in the ECU but the powers that be have decided its not safe any more !

Cotton wool society we live in!

The cynic in me believes it more likely a ploy to generate revenue. Comfort access has the ability to raise and lower the roof from the fob. Its a software change. They implement it on CA cars to get more money, but simply turn it off on non CA cars to make you buy CA. As I say... just the cynic speaking ;)

Charge more and folk will still buy just to be in the exclusive club!
Having said that, I will pay up just to make the car more useable - I take a more pragmatic view on the roof topic.

Cynic listening!

I think I'll stick with my unofficial fix (put a switch somewhere in the loom between the ecu and the diag. socket) as I would be very unhappy if I could no longer put up the roof from outside.

mine was booked in last friday had told them car was sorn'd so would need trade plates was told no problem driver would be picking it up at 08:30. At 12.30 muppet arrived asked him "you did bring trade plates"
received blank look and told sorry you will have to rebook what a bunch of t****rs. now have to wait till after xmas, still could be worse my 2011 3 series is one of the not affected models but that one has an extra security feature it now tells me my key fob is not for that car awaiting new fob reader on order from germany, i think bmw have a special production line with cars built with random faults just for me!
:x
