E89 security fix - any updates?

OK, now I'm mightily confused. When I booked my car in for a service at the local BMW dealer some weeks ago, I mentioned the keyfob vulnerability and the the chap at that time said that the focus was X5s and X6s but that a fix for other cars would be coming along. He suggested that when I came in for the service work (i.e. today), then if the fix was available then they would apply it.

Today a different person informed me that the vulnerability only manifests itself on cars with the Comfort option. As mine does not have have Comfort , and hence keyless access, then I am at no risk. :?

Now I thought the issue was that the scum elements in our society are able to take a blank key, encode it, and then shove it in the dashboard. As such I can't see how any BMW is more or less vulnerable, other than the demand for it to be nicked from overseas.

Has anyone seen a definitive statement from BMW on the problem? It all seems rather vague.

That's certainly my understanding of it, but TBH I've not kept up to date with developments since the BMW initially (finally) admitted there was a security issue. I'm leaving it another couple of weeks until the 8-weeks BMW quoted initially is up, then I'll check again to get the official line.

I think you'll find its ill informed dealers.

Mine told me it was ONLY X5 etc that were at risk and our 1'er wasnt affected, which is different to what I've read elsewhere.

Mind you, I was speaking to the sales guy, not service desk.

Interesting.

Being that this site seems to have quite a broad reach, are there any formal contacts with BMW that we can use to elicit a definitive statement? It would be helpful for all of the members if we can put something on here so that everyone knows what action, if any, they should take.

If not then I'm happy to put pen to paper and write to BMW (UK).

Well, mine is booked in for an oil service in a few weeks. Normally I wait since I get an 8 am slot. However, they have told me that they need it all day.... hmmm. Software update?

monkey dealers all the same but only one seems to no what he is doing, monkey for me all the time, Furry one of course.

Got a call from BMW UK today, the upgrade is ready & they will pass on my details to Local dealer to get the fix done within the next 2 weeks.
So looks like it will be sorted for all of us soon.

Just got off the ok to my local dealer. It's funny that they are only contacting people who are getting in touch with them and adding their names to a list for contact next week.

The security update was received into their workshop today and I will get a call next week to book it in

Just spoken to my local (Cooper Cobham) and they confirmed there is an update available and BMW UK will be contacting owners by letter (but didn't know how soon!) and I should call back quoting the reference number on the letter for them to book in...

Will give it a fortnight & call back if I haven't received anything by then!

Not wishing to comprimise the effectiveness of the fix in any way but what is the fix? Hardware /Software ?

my car decided this morning that the break fluid needs changing , when I was booking it in for this to be done asked about this update and was told it will be another 3/4 weeks and they will contact me when they have it

Does the brake fluid change not coincide with engine oil an filter????
They are both at two year intervals.

Just took my Z in for a headlight defect and they also said the fix is not out yet for Z4s.

It will depend how many miles you do. I.e. oil change could arrive first.

the warning came on this morning and when I look in idrive it has only flagged brake fluid

The brake fluid is time based (2yr) and the engine is condition but with the 2 yr max caveat.

I found out to my cost that the two year rule is from the date of manufacture and NOT date of first registration. :(

Should be from registration date.

Maybe it should - but its definately not!

Mine popped up on the screen two years from date of manufacter and this was confirmed by BMW customer services - Remember the brake fluid is hygroscopic !
