E89 Seats- now resolved (base transplant)

As Pondrew said. This is a very expensive place to spend time. The possibilities are almost endless for spending more money. I had never really thought much about a heated steering wheel until Dave mentioned how much he enjoyed having one and then of course there is still the exhaust improvement I am looking for. Not to mention the CSL wheels which I absolutely love. I was looking at a photograph of Nigel’s E89 today which just confirmed how much I do like them. I’m not sure which will come first divorce or bankruptcy. 🤣

I would just like to add one small detail to the wheels Ian, mine are replica 1M wheels which are 359 style and not the csl wheels, there is a difference 😉
I would hate you to order the wrong ones 🤣

Thanks for preventing me from making a catastrophic mistake Nigel.
The ones I had on my red E89 are my absolute favourites.IMG_1400.jpeg

Looked well, I've not seen any of that style before.

They are German, 19 inch .Beyern Aviatics. I bought them off another Forum member who had sold his E89. :D

Those wheels are lush. Funny as I seriously thought about buying the Melbourne red 35is, mainly because of the wheels, then didn't. Then you bought my E89. Now I have a Melbourne F31.

Our Z4 lives are becoming intertwined! :o

Oh and my daughter went to Lincoln shopping today! Spooky! :)

AND I have these lying around...

We were in Lincoln this morning. Angela had some things to collect from M and S. This is getting really worrying. What next?🤦‍♂️
I loved the wheels but they were swines to clean. However, I would still have another set if some came along at the right price and I could get it past Angela.
Are those seat frames for the ‘conversion?’😀

They are the Z3 bases (as most Z3s had electric seats as standard!? :o ). I need to fit my high-tech 1974 MGB seats to them! I have even ground off the headrest brackets as they didn't have those in the early 1960s. Airbags have gone too, along with the roll-over hoops! I am making a death trap! :D

You must be mad! Well I already knew that. But I’m looking forward to seeing the finished project. There was one for sale on one of the Bangers and Cash programmes. It looked very good but I can’t remember what it went for. Have you given yourself a timescale?👍

No. It is proving to be much more complicated than it seemed at first (quelle surprise). I knew it wasn't going to be easy but because the seller of my 'kit' is a knob who did everything on the cheap (as i have since found out), it is more complex than it would have been. Luckily I have found a couple of really helpful people who are also building them, so they are filling in the huge gaps.
I am very slowly starting to get somewhere, but at the moment it is an uphill battle.

I hadn’t realised you were having such a struggle. You are a braver man than I am. Good luck, I’m sure you’ll get there in the end. 👍

£22,000 in and I just have a pile of bits (many of which don't fit or are lacking so have had to make/ buy more) and a stripped Z3! And am about to spend another £4,000 next week on other stuff for it! Don't tell the wife!

As I said before I am so far in now there is no going back.

And you will need to code 459 to the CAS and NFRM fopr the memory functions to work

Hi Dave
Just sent you a PM Re the bolster inflation function when you did your seat conversion.
Cheers

You have a PM :D

That’s a wrap

The passenger seat was working with some recabling but the drivers wasn’t

It was evident that it needed canbus to the seat which wasn’t provided by the cars loom

I used the canbus from the back of the stereo to close the loop and the drivers seat came to life!

The only thing I couldn’t figure was how to power the bolsters- as the loom was different

Thanks to all that helped and contributed. If anyone needs guidance in future please drop me a line

Stuart

Congrats on sorting it!

The bolsters just need a direct 12v feed, like powering e85 electric seats.

I will get you more information when I can. Sorting the passenger bolster should be easier to work out. The drivers side may be different.

Rob I’ll get those looms back in the post tomorrow

I did use 2 pins from the drivers side…

Well done Stewart, good to read that the headache is now over lol.

I think the next thing Ian may be wanting is a heated steering wheel…

But thank you!

I need to work out the relationship between the old loom and connector (the new bases don’t have a loom or connector for bolsters) and linking that to the switch AND the control box

Will be easy to sort don't worry. Will hopefully get some time later to take a few pictures and point you in the right direction.
