E89 seat Mod...

Hi

I'm currently in the middle of fitting E89 M sport seats into my E85. ( This is about a mod for E89 seats not fitting them into E85/86)

Whilst playing around with the seats and working out all the bits involved fitting them I noticed the front of the seat base doesn't lift up very high. Think they only give about 50mm of movement. When I'm driving I like to feel like I cant slide forward on the seat, like a bucket seat.

Before you ask the seat is at its lowest setting on the back flat to the floor and the front tilted as high up as it will go.

Looking at the seats I realised a quick and very easy fix. I've just made up 2 extension pieces per seat and raised the front by an extra 40mm. I'm so pleased with the result, now when you sit on the seat you feel like you cant go anywhere.

Obviously this is completely down to personal choice, But thought I'd share it with you guys as somebody might be tempted..

The good part is if it's not to your liking you can just bolt it back together as it was. No need to cut or alter the original parts. Undo the nut, stick the extension in then bolt up tight..

Added a few pics so you can get an idea what I'm crapping on about

Is the modification safe?

Yes without a doubt. I've used steel twice as thick as the steel used in the construction of the seat. If you where to sheer the bolt or the steel I think you would need to crash at about 900 MPH and if you crash at that speed your remains will be scooped up in a bucket anyway

Nice idea,
Whilst the steel clearly wont bend, each new strip/bracket should ideally have 3 fixing points not 2. However tight the bolts are, the bracket would rotate under duress. I think this is how the MOT inspector would see it.

Any modification could be a Problem for an MOT inspector, the fact the car has different seats "could" be a problem. I do get what you are saying thou.

Hopefully the MOT tester won't remove my seats from the car, turn them upside down and inspect the linkages.

The bracket can't rotate as the whole thing works buy pivoting from the back. I've worked in engineering for 22 years so I'm confident in this mod for my own use and wouldn't dream of putting it back as standard.

As I said I'm just sharing the idea because the improvement was hugely noticeable

All electrics and airbags all good and working?

As you say it can't move as it's anchored at the back 2 fixing points so won't move forward or backward and it looks to me like 10mm plate, ten ton tessie won't crush that. Good mod.

Nice work Yorkie , can only be a improvement in comfort from the E85 E86 sport seats which i have always been underwhelmed by especially after any decent duration .
RE the upward angle though ? will it level out if required ? If not you might have dead legs if doing a long drive :?
