e89 SDRIVE 23I, IS IT DIRECT INJECTION?

Does anyone one know if the N52 engine used in the 2.5 & 3.0 normally aspirated e89's are direct injection engines?

No..

The N53 B25/B30 engines were not EU5 compliant at that time when BMW did choose which engine type would be used in the E89 (I guess). I assume it will change to a N53 direct injected engine somewere model year 2012,13....

Thanks for the replies, quite glad it is a port injection as opposed to a direct injection engine as there seems to be issues with coking up:

That info relates to Audi and Porsche though.

I don't think the problem is marque specific but generally engineering specific i.e. what happens in the NON DFI engines is that when the fuel is injected into the port area of the manifold it gets sucked into the engine, therefore washing over the back of the inlet valves as a mist. The injector cleaners help this washing process as well as their other benefits.

With the DFI engines the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber, therefore no washing takes place on the back of the inlet valves and the deposits start to build up, I suspect the particles originate from both EGR and crankcase ventilation and are re-circulated to be burnt off in the combustion process.

I think this is why N53 engines have lower emission, more bhp and lower fuel consumption, e.g. 325i E90 vs sDrive23i.

My understanding is that they sound pretty poor at idle though, as they are practically running on air. :?
