Dear all, I purchased a nice 2009 Sdrive23i about six months ago. The car has a great specification but one thing I've noticed is that the sat nav has never been updated. From investigation it seems to have a premium system ( updating done through USB port in the glove box). Has anyone else updated the maps to a newer version and is it best to go to bmw or are there any alternative suppliers? Thanks

I've done an update last year. I purchased an 32GB usb stick myself and asked BMW to copy the files to that stick since they will charge you a lot if they supply the USB stick. Still needed to pay 80 euro for the unlock code to install. The update self was easy and straight forward.
It's not like the E85/86 where you can just put in a new disc which are easily available.
It can be done a lot cheaper than what BMW charge but details shouldn't be discussed here IMO.
Done mine last year and as thefmister suggests an FSC Activation code is required.

I think i paid around £50 a good few years back but i got the FSC code "elsewhere"
We were in the same situation when we purchased our 2009 35i. One thing you'll also need to check is the system software version, as this may also need to be updated before you can update to the latest navigation maps. We were quoted over £500 for this along with updating the navigation maps by our local smug faced BMW service manager. We ended up using an independent to complete all the software updates, for £100, and then purchased the FSC code of a well know and recommended internet supplier, PM me if you'd like the details on the FSC code source.
Yes i had to have my idrive software updated first to a later version before i could read larger USB sticks (done free at BMW due to some ghost idrive problems i dreamt up

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to respond. The only other thing thats missing from the car is bluetooth, but Im going to get the Fiscon system fitted as its integrated into the Idrive.
