E89 roof relay change

Ok, thank you! I will order the parts later this week and fit them straight away. I am all for simple, preventative maintenance.

Literally just swap them out by removing old ones and putting the news ones in? Battery can be left connected etc?
Yes, correct.
But dont use any tool, you can brick the red fuse box next to the battery.
I'd go further and say get rid of any metal objects in the boot first!
Hell, even an umbrella falling across the battery could ruin your day if it bridges the terminals with a metal part.
I actually have an old piece of rubber floor mat that I lay across the top of the battery on any car I'm tinkering with.
After welding a spanner to the wing of an old Capri I learned the hard way.

Is there not an easier to follow UK guide to replacing these?
Maybe including where to buy and what spec of part?
Just a thought... :D

Jesus it easy enough.
Go to BMW dealer, they have hundreds in stock.
Seems like they fail all the time, used on many vehicles.
Then just lift floor in boot, pull relays out plug in new, 30 second job.
They are even pink, to make the job easier.

Hi Craig,

I’ll link the ones I ordered off eBay here

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20205846...V%2Bl1yuzbHBHw%3D%3D|ampid:PL_CLK|clp:2334524

As far as fitting them I can repost pictures when I have time but I found it very straightforward a 5 minute job

Remove boot carpet
Remove Foam
Reach down to the top relay & unclip
Reach down to the bottom relay & unclip

I made sure I made a note of how they had come out (which side was facing upwards)

Then refitted them, bottom one first

They only fit one way round.
But why do they fail?
Tested on a bench they work fine.
Is the control module detecting a coil fault.
This is why my Foxwell reader said there was a fault. How else could it know there is a fault?
Are coil open circuit resistor in relay breaking down changing resistance?

Cheaper from dealer £16.
But of course takes petrol money to drive to dealer.

What should be easier than a BMW part number and a photo? Should I settle over to UK as resident and post it once more?

Just read the basics in my linked thread on ZRoadster or even Spoolstreet. It's well explained.

It's NOT a simple fail of a relay. It's experience and the result of investigating lot's of destroyed hydraulic pumps.

At least, it's a welded relay contact, that can't be opened anymore. This will drive the pumps motor continously until it dies due to overheating.

If you live miles away from a BMW dealer they will post them out to you for £2, personally I would prefer to buy these from a dealer than Ebay and RobbiZ4 yes please relocate to the UK, Im sure we could keep you busy especially as the E89 gets older!

Well, I just read about a special letter to all EU citizens living in UK. Seems to be a very funny situation at the moment. :D

The relay change was a very easy job, removed some dated 1411 which suggests they had been changed at some point (14 reg car). Then I saw that the control box was marked 'approved'. Does that mean it's been replaced?

Your hydraulic pump as well as the old relays are build in 2014 (14/week18 & 14/week11). All parts were built in at the production line, nothing has been replaced before.

I’ve just discovered this thread… our car is 2010. Don’t have an issue but don’t want one either! So going to place an order and get them swapped out as preventative maintenance. Thanks guys. A

Update: ordered this morning with Soper BMW Lincoln. They still offer Z4 Forum discount and cost me £30.46 the pair. Part number is same : 12 63 1742 690.
A Little January preventative maintenance: I read elsewhere in this thread not to use screwdrivers! I just need to find the black clip and slide out the assembly to easier access the relays….

Alle details can be found in the following thread:
