E89 roof relay change

I'm glad a saw this thread! I checked mine the other day and they were both dated 2010 so ordered replacements at the weekend. Worth doing as a precaution for only £27.98.

That's what I thought and then I found my 2010 originals very badly pitted  We work with DC contactors and relays - I know how this ends

well the relays just arrived and they are manufactured on last year's week 29th and 35th.

the old are actually from the beginning back in 2009.

i have them opened and may i assume they are not too bad at all?

Just spotted this thread linked from elsewhere. My relays are 10 years old now so just ordered a set for some DIY.

Loving all this free time for car work and empty roads :driving:

Thanks @Smartbear for this tip. Very easy 5 minute job indeed ...

I just swapped out my original 0923 relays for some new 1948 ones ...

They were in pretty poor condition after 10 years and almost 50k miles:

And I think I might well have had a lucky escape as one of them had this broken resistor rolling around in the case! I'm pretty sure I didn't break it when opening it up as it's under the main parts of the relay!

You must have had the 'Borg' relay - resistance was futile...
:exitright:

Well followed the pack and replaced mine using the SmartBear approach, couldn’t get mine to click out as per RobiZ4..must have added 2 minutes to the whole process..

Superficially don’t look too bad IMHO..I’m sure Gruppen SturmBaher RobiZ4 will advise

Excuse the fingers..

Cool. Indeed these contacts look better than in the average relay.
But no wonder, your car is only from 2012!

I think it spent a lot of its life in Manchester..an area with high rainfall...so probably the roof was never operated..

I wonder how much contribution motoring the roof with a low battery contributes to induction arcing?

I think low battery operation would have a big impact on arcing because ohms law. :tumbleweed:

 Your roof was down on a sunny day in 2013 and again in 2015  :poke:
Look at the huge difference between your like new contacts and my 2010 relay

Well - then it's freakn hammered :o More material transferred there than any place.
It might be interesting if some of us post pics in a year or two... assuming a couple of top down days occur. :poke:

Replaced mine on the weekend. The old ones were in good shape considering they are 10 years old, should get another 10 years out of these.
