E89 roof relay change

They buy in at much lower cost and then mark up a price whatever they want to charge.

I used similar to this to make a H bridge to drive a motor driven by a car battery for a flight sim i built.
But wouldn't be worth the hassle rewiring.

Great write up! ordered mine this morning... someone at BMW will be scratching their head wondering why they have sold all these relays this week :?

£16.12 each including VAT from BMW, they have to be ordered in and lead time is two days. Think I will do this job, I am all into simple preventative maintenance.

Ordered ours yesterday from Cotswold BMW, £14.81 each delivered.
Why are dealers charging different prices for things, I have found this a few times when phoning around for parts.
Surely they all come from the same place and cost the same to them.

Stop complaining - I had to pay around £20 each . Still cheap insurance at the end of the day.

I think there is a rrp for these items but some dealers offer a discounted price to forum members etc.
I asked my local bmw dealers & they offered a 10% discount

You have to consider, that our DC motor (500W/40A) is driven in both directions. Plus and minus will be swapped in each opening as well as closing cycle. Two items are required to replace each of the E89 relais, may cost some 50-100 $.
In addition, somebody has to develop and produce an alternative loom and housing for it.

That is what a H bridge circuit does.
The circuit is H shaped, with the motor on the horizontal of the H and each vertical has two solid state switches
Opposing switches are operated to run the motor one way or the other.
Would need quite a bit of rewiring.
Switch 1A/1B for one direction and 2A/2B for reverse.
And yes a lot of fake Fotek devices out there.
The labels are slightly different on the fake.
I wouldn't recommend the one i pictured, that was just for reference.

It’s not so much the amount of roof failures, although if you read some of the links it’s a fair few) but the consequences if you’re one of the unlucky owners, a replacement roof motor is over £2,500 and there’s pics of molten ones on this thread caused by bad relays
Why would you even risk it if the replacement relays are only £30? Even getting your car home with a stuck roof could be a major pain in the rear

I almost asked the same earlier and there isn't a whole load of info on it it seems, possibly one pic of a burnt out motor.
For the small cost though and rather than tempt fate I am another who has bought new relays.
I think however that the age of the relays could be a non starter though, a 10 year old car could have had the roof cycled once every weekend or 3 year old car 3 times a day. Obviously if any is going to go wrong it would be the one that is used more often so time isn't the question its how many times its been used.
I think many of these relays will be changed out with nothing wrong with them but as said earlier after knowing what could happen is it worth the risk.
