E89 Rear Tail Light

Seems like a common problem that is generally caused by owners slamming the boot closed rather than relying on the soft close mechanism.

Anyway I have the issue on my latest E89 but only in the right rear light. I stripped the boot lining and removed both rear lights and on inspection it would appear the left one was replaced in 2014 and is still fine.

So I looked at the options and decided against the eBay refurb solution and opted instead for a new replacement from Autodoc for £156. Unfortunately a couple of days after payment they contacted me to advise that the item was out of stock and I needed to choose a replacement. The replacement was an additional £100 so I declined and opted for a refund despite the item subsequently reappearing on their website for £160.

Fast forward a few weeks and the price although fluctuating is consistently up around £270 so I'm still holding out.

If anyone has any other suggestions on alternative suppliers I would welcome their guidance

The taillights a bit like N54 injectors become a desirable commodity driven by scarcity..they’ve been up and down and in and out of stock over the last 3 years..

The E89 repair guy gets good reports

Sorry,
But this taillight problem is completely unrelated to your description. Honestly, that's n...e.

Frankly, it's simply a quality issue mostly after 10 years.

The minimum price for a new taillight has been around €300 for years. The manufacturer of these clusters is Automotive Lighting (AL) in Italy, a subsidiary of Magnet Marelli.

Thats good to know and as my wife often recounts - "it's not very often you're right but you're wrong again"

I feel like celebrating my new found wisdom with a ceremonial boot slam

Well, there's another todo to make your wife more happy:
get the two gas springs renewed on the trunk lid. It will make a difference between night and day. Only a flat screwdriver ist required.

Stabilus 499514 570N are required.

Have you tried Ebay? Got mine from Italy last July £159. Think I had to pay £20 or so customs on top. Which I knew about and was still best price around at the time for a New one.

Right 714021850702 ~270€

AL/Magnet Marelli ist the OEM, all other "brands" are solely distributors.

Be careful of "new" parts, as used parts are subject to the same aging damage.
