E89 prices now merging with E85s . Yep really

I don't think you will ever get a 'great' deal from someone who wants to make profit at both ends. Can you sell the car privately and then reconsider?

I love the GTR but I cant help thinking these first models are just over priced. 38k.... it seems insane for a 6-7 year old car - has it even depreciated 50% ?

Surely the running costs on this thing are incredible.

Market dictates prices...

If you can't buy one cheaper, that's where the price point starts.
The car would be about £49000 when new, so residual value has been incredibly good

Running costs are high, but I only do 4/5k a year max so it's not really an issue.. Insurance is around £500, so double the 35is... As is the tax.

But it's definitely one car I need to tick off the list... And I pretty much think I could own one and sell in 12 months without losing anything if I get the deal right..

Unfortunately it wasn't to be...... This time.

Those original GTR's were bargains brand new when you consider what tech and performance they offered. The list price of the later model years were ramped up massively despite very few significant changes. That's why the early ones still fetch good money.

They are a car I'd like to own at some point too.

Yea..

The facelift in 2010 with more bhp, bigger engine and a few cosmetic touches upped the prices..
New ones went to £70,000..

I was looking at early GTR's around 3 yrs ago at £32/£33k...
These then jumped to £38/£39k overnight..

And prices haven't really dipped much since...
I have had an R32GTR & R33 GTR... Never could afford a 34 ...
Prices are still high for any GTR, but they are genuine engineering masterpieces of their time..

Few interesting points. 1 owner? Hmmmm registration number looks like it's been an ex BMW car and registered at distribution. But then the area code is Huddersfield and Y prefix is Yorkshire so it could be. it's a 23i so at launch bottom of the range and not considered a great engine unfortunately but I'd rather have that than a 2.0l, just a personal preference.

We've had some horror stories of engine failures only on the 23i funnily enough so wonder how this has faired mechanically.

Higher millage, turn off for some people but not all. Spec, it's not got much going for it to be honest. Looks like an early one with the extended leather option, manual, no nav, standard wheels non m sport.

It's possibly priced to sell? Which would make me wonder if there are niggles or issues the current owner is having with it.

That car vs's E86? I'd have a E86 all day long. That car vs's a E85? I'd just walk thanks :P

Never heard of engine failures on the 23i. It's the same engine as on facelifts E85/6 and the only issue I know of is the HVA problem.

Have a look here http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=74310 there has been at least two or three E89 23i owners with the same issue.

Have to say I've spotted this Z4 locally and very tempted as a potential Z3 replacement,

Re the E89, I haven't seen many high mileage examples so can't comment on how they might be holding up but I do have reservations with high mileage examples especially against the Z3 where cars with over 250000 are becoming common with no problems what so ever, I just don't think the E89 will have the same bullet proof logevity. Running an E89 alongside my Z3 it was plainly obvious the E89 has areas of poor build quality which I found quite a let down and why I still have the Z3. I'm not knocking the E89 as I found plenty to like but older ones I'm not so sure.

Tim.

Had 3 x Z3's and i liked them....

They do had like a ferret on crack though.. Poor in the 90's,laughably bad now..

In some respects E89s are holding up better than E85s were when they were about 5 years old ( economic situation is now different) , i bought my 5 year old E85 3.0 with Aerokit for 10.8k in 2010 the car had travelled 26k when i picked it up.

It really was some buy.

I'm thinking the E89 may fare better with long term value than the previous shapes as there are less in the UK

Not sure if BMW are going to be making a new Z either... in that case the 35iS is the last high performance BMW roadster for a while. I think I read somewhere that BMW mentioned the current model would last until 2018-2020, which would mean 10-12 years?
