E89 pop-up screen

I recently posted that I'm looking for a 28i. I still am, and yesterday took a look at one. It was a great drive, but not the right car for me, so the search continues.

One thing that disappointed me was the quality of the Nav screen - awful, and not a patch on that in my 5 series. My 2007 E35 similarly had a low quality map image. Sat Nav was one of my must-haves for the 28i, as I'll be doing lots of touring, but I'm wondering now whether I've got that right, and perhaps I'd be better using a separate device.

But this raises a few questions:

Do cars without Sat Nav still have the pop up screen?
And if not, does that mean you only get the idrive if you have Nav?
And if there's no screen, do you lose the visual indication when using the parking sensors?

No idrive controller = no screen & no visual for park sensors.
I appreciate time & tech moves on fast but I think the E89 screen & options available on it are pretty good if you consider the age of the cars in question

For a much more modern look you could have a non-iDrive car and add in the Android touchsceen with iDrive controller. This would give you access to most nav apps available (either "live" or stand alone) as well as loads of music apps etc. If it had parking sensors these would have a visual display on the screen whether it had iDrive or not.
For full details see the Group Buy in my signature below

Easy to forget E89 is a very, very old car. It came out in 2009, it's software was developed probably 07/08! That's before smartphones were really a thing let alone decent in car computing.

Personally I find the presentation is indeed clunky and old, but update the maps and you will get there . It even works with Spotify on iOS which is pretty incredible given it's vintage.

What was the issue with the 28? Not enough power?

Not driven one myself yet, some people have said there is no noticeable difference between that and the 20, despite being a second quicker 0-60.

This

For what it’s worth, the original (non-3G) iPhone was announced in 2007; the things that we measure by the car today have developed from there... It’s hard to remember a time pre-smartphone, but given the time that the E89 iDrive system was developed, I think it’s pretty bloody good :D

Not at all - the 28i was very impressive, much more responsive than my previous 2.5si. It just wasn't a good example. I'm off to see another 28i later this week.
I haven't driven a 20i, so have no experience of the difference, but would suggest that with 60 more horses it surely has more ooomph.

Are you saying that a map update can improve the image quality?

No not at all, but at least they're correct & up to date so you will reach your destination :P. Personally I'd rather keep the cabin tidy and use slower maps rather than bodge my phone onto the dash somewhere.

Great news! I am hoping some more will come up for sale before summer.

(Sorry, posted twice, meant to edit my above comment but it seems I have posted twice....)

I find it ok, Ive got it setup to split screen, highlights all the junction exits etc. Only thing thats a bit annoying is you have to manually switch to night mode. Plus you get lots of little extras with the iDrive like the hard drive for music, PDC display etc.

couldn't you create a shortcut of this to the numbered buttons on the radio?
Yes I have and also for the zoom on the DVD play and the vehicle system/control check... just have to remember which buttons to press

If you keep your finger on the button without pressing it then the function of that button will show up on the nav screen.

I wanted a 28i, but like you I found not many examples on the market had the spec/colour/combo I wanted- there are literally ten times as many 20i's on the market. After some research I discovered the 18i and 20i both have identical engines to the 28i (28i just has an expensive BMW remap and larger front brakes) and like many on here I decided to get a 20i and simply remap to 28i power or more. Far better value and gives you a wider choice of cars. 28i not worth the £3-4k more than an equivalently specced 20i/18i when you can get a remap for £295 from celtic tuning.

Yes, some have said this, but also others have said that in addition to larger brakes, the 28i has different pistons and a different ECU, I'm not totally convinced. Also I did take a look at 20is for sale, and whilst they are cheaper, didn't find them 3-4k cheaper.

Did you bother to tell your insurance company about the remap, and if so what was their reaction?
