E89 PDC Speaker

Hi People,
My E89 has it’s PDC speaker glued on the deck (pic). The previous owner didn’t know why either. It looks unsightly and I would love to move it to its proper location but I don’t know where this should be. Does anyone know, please?
Thanks.

Hi, is it aftermarket, has it got PDC specified as an option (S508)...? PDC sound comes through the mid range speakers and has a visual indicator on the Idrive system when engaged :? Looking at your earlier photos, couldn't see any sensors on the front bumper and no PDC button on the button panel (don't know if you would get a button anyway if it only had rear sensors fitted?) :?

Correct, no sensors on the front (only rear), no PDC button and S508 NOT listed as an option. So is this aftermarket I wonder? Previous owner didn’t know.

Yep it is aftermarket. Parking sensors on the E89 came complete front and back with the button in the centre console. Odd place to put the speaker though maybe you can try and relocate it behind the bulkhead trim in the boot or one of the trims behind the seats.

Its always irritating on thse cars that these 'options' like parking sensors and it looks like a proper bluetooth can be missing at this price point..

Yep you do wonder! This type of car should have parking sensors, folding mirrors, wind deflector and since it's a convertible maybe just maybe heated seats as standard oh and add footwell lights to that list too. It's both the German makers being mean and greedy and the first owner being stingy when speccing the car.

Totally agree, mark Idrive as an option at over 2k and then ignore something useful as PDC for £200 quid (I think), same happened to me with bluetooth!!!! but I did get a poxy ski hatch! :x

You see it a lot on the 35i cars, by the time they paid for the pokey engine and the 326M wheels, they ran out of money for the 'goodies' so a lot of those end missing 'toys'

Yeah. Will def be relocating at some point if its not too much stress at least its just glued and not screwed, so can be moved.

I've seen a few E89's with just rear sensors, but your right its listed as front/back on the option list... I wonder if it could be plumbed into the speaker system and eliminate the aftermarket speaker?

I suspect those are all aftermarket. As you say the original price list for the E89 shows it as front back complete unlike the 3 series and other BMWs where you could have just rear sensors the Z4 only had one option. A car audio centre / electrician may know if it is possible to plumb it in although I can't see how.

I've said it before, but I'm always amazed how poorly equipped the majority of E89's seem to be. Even the halo models.

Funny I thought quite the opposite when I was searching for mine. Many E89 seem to have the parking sensors heated seats leather and idrive whereas if you search for a 3 series of the same era most don't.

A 3 series of that vintage always seemed to be the ultimate definition of seats/wheels are optional extras..

I always liked the blanking plugs to emphasise the feeling that you couldn’t quite afford the pukka thing..

As another poster has noted the cognoscenti move fast now when they find a more fully featured car at a reasonable price..

Thanks Silverstar. That’s exactly what I did... moving it took 10 mins and found the perfect position for it behind the bulkhead. Should have been done that way originally.

Of course shes now demanding to be driven hard as battery warning came on so, trickle charger is on.

It's a good job they just stuck it down with tape so you could move it without any damage to the trim. My guess is the past owner who had it installed perhaps may have been a bit hard of hearing hence needed the speaker outside rather than behind the trim where the sound might be a bit muted.

you must find it hard to put it somewhere, having a garage so full of stuff...

I think that's the tidiest garage I've ever seen or is it a prison cell? (poor thing being kept cooped up like that!). :D
