E89 New Style of Drinks Holder

Hi all,
I've been talking to a guy from Denmark over the last few weeks after I found out he had designed a drinks holder to replace the ashtray in the Z4. Now I don't smoke so this was a great idea, in my mind, to have something useful on longer journeys.
He has now sent me one (FOC) for which I've made a video for him to use to promote it. I'm genuiningly very happy with it and it does exactly what you'd want from it. Now it could be seen as a comprimise due to it's location, but I certainly think it is far better and of much more use than the alternatives.
Anyway I've attached some photos and my video, and if you want to buy one, here is the link to his site... https://bimmercup.com

That looks good!

Presumably no issue with an auto box?

Thanks!
Alas not having an auto I can't say for certain, but with the manual and putting it into 3rd, which is central then there is no issue at all. So as the auto is central then I'd of thought thst it would be the same

Can't seem to find the video referenced on the website regarding installation....
The video is on my 1st post above.
I only posted the video this morning, so he hasn't yet updated the website.

Looks great and perfect for a car without the ashtray lid.
Shame the ashtray lid is attached to the ashtray and couldn't be used along with this.

Alas there is always a trade-off somewhere, and in that case then you wouldn't be able to have enough room for a can size hole, due to the available space.

Pretty low tech for you Dave! I was expecting it to cool or heat drinks with flashing lights and an option to load 50 cans from the boot etc.

You'd be surprised what I was thinking
As there is now a spare powered and illumination circuit plug underneath I was considering some form of illuminated bottom coaster, and the other option was to have some sort of plug in wireless phone charging mat, but decided not to bother in the end.

Joking aside it is a nice bit of 3D printing, I wonder if your Danish contact could replicate the two small grilles for the front bumper that could accommodate a pair of led driving/fog lights?

Hi all,

This is a nice option for those that need it. I don’t find myself needing it and when my wife is in the car, she has the factory optional holder that she can insert when needed. I prefer the uncluttered look of the hinged compartment especially since the whole center console is carbon fiber in our Z. The can holder would just break up that uncluttered look in my opinion.

Now that is a good idea and a good solution for anyone who likes to drink in the car (not me!) but I would say aesthetically it would look better if the surface was just plain and smooth rather than those horizontal lines / ridges or could this not be avoided due to the 3D printed nature?

Very nice, but what about the lose of cigarette lighter? You still need it for emergency phone charging, usb connection don't work with any speed.
It would be nice if a 3d printer would make a console compartment for compact handguns. With the roof down, you need a locked compartment for a handgun. When the doors are locked, the console is locked.

You have a 12v accessory socket in the centre console!. My wife uses this as the cable is neatly out of the way.

There is a contact option on the website, you could always ask him.

I'm not sure on the 3D printing side of it. But then I quite like the look as opposed to something that may well have looked plain and boring had it not had the lines :?

It looks like a decent printed part -- the website doesn't share the material used in the print... is it ASA?
From the pictures, I really can't tell if the color matches the rest of the trim, but it looks similar, at the least.

Good gig work though. Part design and prototyping were likely only a few hours of work. Materials cost is minor. Just has a very niche buyer and I'm guessing he'd do better to provide more options/customizations to meet that niche buyer's needs.
