E89 N20 Service Frequency

Just had my n20 annual MOT and service. Currently on 40,153 miles.

This years service, at my request was oil, oil filter, air filter and pollen filter.

Last year (1,600 miles ago) the service was oil, oil filter and a brake fluid change.

Plugs and coils were changed at 36k.

What service frequency are other n20 owners working to? Is annually servicing a car that does low miles a bit OTT?

Oil ages with time as well as frequency and type of use…fresh oil protects better through cold damp winters because it’s not carrying combustion related crap and because it’s clean…

1,600 miles per annum ironically probably calls for proportionately more changes…

Personally I change the oil and filter every year before the winter to give the engine the best chance…

You can skip the air filter changes as they are directly proportional to the amount of use and type of conditions they are operated in..ditto plugs n coils..

All IMHO

However modern engines and their oils are designed to cope with the abuse they are handed by their owners so it’s unlikely to be a direct causal factor of any engine issues..

It's a tricky one on low mileage cars;
As Peter says above, there is an argument for low usage cars to have the oil changed more regularly than higher; but there is also an argument for not changing oil every 2,000 miles or so, as it could be considered a waste of money (and we have to think about the environmental impact these days don't we?).

Personally I go by the 5,000 mile or 2 yearish 'rule', which ever comes first for oil and filter.

Spiders and cobwebs on the air filter are more of a problem than dirt IME. :)

Thanks Peter and Pondrew for your views, was reviewing my annual servicing budget and will continue with an oil service annually as a minimum.
