Hi all

Looking for a how to on removal and replacement, cant see one in my searches, has any one done one?

Also looking for options for replacing them in my Z4, any one done this can point me at some options that just drop in that they would recommend. Not looking to break the bank with them just replace the OEM for some thing a bit better...

This is the video I used to replace my tweeters which needed to plug into the mid range speakers. Easy job with the cheap plastic trim removal tools.

I replaced mine with the Audison door midrange and the tweeters, and the difference is huge,,I also replaced the centre and two rear speakers later,
The Audison are BMW plug and play (as are Eton speakers) if you go on their site they have a configurator for your car which is really good

I literally just did this today. No videos I could find but basically:

1) remove 4 screws from the door. 1 behind the door handle, 1 in the door storage tray near the lover Right hand side, and two very well hidden in the middle of the storage tray under the door handle/arm rest.

2) use a pry tool to pop the trim out all around the sides. When you first get the pry tool in you’ll probably hear the clips starting to pop out. It’s quite easy to pull the out from there all around the edge.

3) pull the tweeter out. It can be a bit fiddly. Pull it towards you and then over to the A pillar.

4) then the whole door card/trim should be free. Careful not to yank it as there are still lots of wires cables and clips attached to the back of it.

5) from there you should be able to see and access the mid range speaker which is fixed with 3 torx screws. Remove them and it’ll fall out. Unplug the speaker and replace with the new one.

6) reverse the process to put it all back together.

I got a like for like replacement, so an OE mid range. I'm not upgrading or anything. Just tossing out a crackly speaker.

I did this on mine, but i just changed them for BMW Mini ones same size but the magnets are far bigger and the sound is much better.
Its also a lot cheaper option as i got them from ebay for under £30 the pair. they still have the extra connections for the tweeters too.

Do you have a link to them

No they work straightaway

Isn't there some thing about the audio being coded differently if tweeters not originally fitted?

My car has iDrive which I guess also means pro audio, but basic speaker, so no tweeter or woofers etc.

Would be interested in upgrade of door speakers and add tweeters etc if i'd benefit from it?

If you have pro audio, you would have tweeters and speakers behind the seats, so im guessing if you don't you just have the standard set up, I cant see why it would need coding, as you take the existing speaker signal, run it into a crossover the feeds your door speaker and tweeter separately or bur a component midrange and tweeter, where the crossover is built in,, same speaker feed, just much better sound

Edit, and of course you could get a dual cone speaker, if you can find one to fit in the door skin,, and yes you will get better sound quality, any speaker that is doing less work in terms of hertz range is a win win

I just chose the mini speakers the same size as my door speakers, it was a straight swap. i even got the mini tweeters as they were cheaper than the E89 ones but they needed a bit of tweaking of the plastic surrounds, nothing a bit of dremeling could not fix.
The work great too
Jon

I thought the equaliser was adjusted some how to make the sound different, to make the best out of not having tweeter.

Doesn’t idrive have the equivalent of a pro head unit by default, and the speakers are different depending on what audio package the car had? Or does my car (definitely has basic speakers) have a business level head unit?

I thought there was some kind of coding to set it to “hi-if” or something.
Mind has iDrive and Professional but no tweeters.

Little update...

Still driving round with the OEM shi*e dooor speakers, driver door has a "blown" sound occasionally, muffled enough to be annoying some times yet other times it is fine or should I say adequate...

Any how, lots of research later and apart from buying OEM there doesnt seem to be a lot of options as a straight fit upgrade, or so I thought.

I had the drivers door in bits and not only found how limited this speaker fitment is but also found I have no tweeters (No wonder it sounds so Shi*te  ) so now I have established this I dug in and kept looking and eventualy stumbed on an Audio shop in Hayes and they do do options for the E sereies BMW and that includes the Z4. I called to discuss and confirm and yes im told most of the units displayed on the web site in the Custom speaker area under BMW will fit however pick whats in your budget and we can confirm.

Any how now to my question, any one upgraded to any of these options in the link and can give feedback on performance.

Realistically I dont want to break the bank (Got trackdays n tyres to pay for first priority :P ) so will probably go for the cheapest with tweeter option but f i n ell thats still a set of Bridgestone V02`s

Might just resort to my wireless over ear HI res headphones and be done with it :headbang:

Found these ones on a site recommended earlier in the topic. Assume this is what you got from ebay...

Look good but I guess £125 ish per side is the going rate

:sos: Installing Eton B100 n to upgrade door and add tweeters to the existing housing. Its a base system originally so 6 speakers. Do I need to add crossovers?

The kit comes with a connector from the midrange to the tweeter, but the compatibility chart and instructions on the eton site says add a crossover...its not very clear.

No you don’t if you but the correct version the tweeters sit in parallel to the mid range ...AFAIK as I’m planning to do an Eton upgrade to my 11 speaker variant..
