E89 Market watch

Two seater convertibles have been produced in decreasing numbers for more than ten years, so now supply on the used market is decreasing too. Over the next decade we might see a lot of drivers wanting their last ICE car and many enthusiasts will seek something sporty with more than four cylinders and/or a manual gearbox.

We'll still see seasonal ups and downs for convertibles, but all of the above makes me think prices will continue upwards over the coming years.

I agree with this Will and the limited build slots for things like the M40i will keep their numbers down and hopefully hold their prices. Woolybear posted on another thread that a Cayman had a build date of 12 months + so there’s no glut of available cars in the 2 seater sector by the looks of it.

Hopefully your Zed will buck your previous money losing trend

We are also being told that this will be the last Z4/TT/SLC, so pretty soon new car buyers looking for a 2 seater convertible might be choosing between an MX-5 and a hypercar.

Enjoy your Z4's while you still can!

As for losing money on mine, I'm really hoping (if "life" allows) to keep it for a very long time. I'm only 36 so I'm probably going to spend half my life in a world where 95% of cars are electric SUV's hired from our overlords at Googlezonla Corp. That will be far more bearable if I've got a twin turbo straight six convertible in the garage that I can occasionally drive with my 2 gallons of annual petrol rations in 2040.

WBAC values seem all over the place especially for the 35’s..

That AY 35is I looked at was WBAC price £13k against my car £14k

That sort of ties in with my response to the AY post Peter where the guy said he wasn’t sure on pricing and I linked 3 recent similar cars all around the £16/£17k mark. IMO the higher end (and possibly a wee bit more) for the rarity of the colour of the AY one. The usual £3kish premium added on after going through WBAC makes that thought process about right

I sold my AUDI daily last month and initially obtained a quote from WBAC to use as an indicator of its worth. Then set a price and started advertising privately. However, somebody on this Forum mentioned a service called Wizzle which is a platform for you to offer your car to more than 3,000 dealers across the country who can chose to bid if interested. I put my vehicle on there and offers started coming in but I soon realised there were three dealers who seemed most keen so each time an offer arrived from one, I’d send a screen shot via email to the others and asked if they wanted to up their bid. Using this tactic I eventually agreed a bid which was £2,500 more than where bids started and only £200 less than I was advertising the car for privately. I might have got more but time was against me as I had lined up another car to buy and needed the money. Wizzle might not work for all but I found it an easy and hassle free option to selling privately - and unlike WBAC, there was no haggling on the agreed price on the hand over.

That’s a good point about the decreasing numbers being made. I do think out of the Z4s the 6 cylinder variants will more likely hold/ gain more value in the long run!

WBAC is an odd one currently. They are offering some superb valuations in some cases close to what cars are retailing at a dealer ship, however I find with Z4s as a whole they are normally off mark, they seem to offer quite low valuations particularly on Z4m!

I think some cars are easier for them to shift on. I checked on my Ford Focus and they'll give me at least as much as I could get privately, but with my Z4 it's a good £3/4k less. I don't think their market is in niche or performance cars.

Well it looks reasonably spec'd, relatively new and low mileage..no doubt he's been led into temptation by Synters

With £200bn of savings the UK has plenty of cash left to spend on toys!

Agree on those points Pete but that is Sytner pricing - £25k is where it needs to be to shift :)

Rather Papa Zee when he sells

Well as they say the market decides..

I wonder how much of the "I've got to have a 35is " is whipped up by the user groups..certainly it is the way with the Porksters AFAICS..

Always sell at the top of the market and buy at the bottom..

I am certain that plays a part - was happy with my well specced 23i bu now I want a VO 35iS with decent spec but in reality I will not use it or drive it any differently to the 23i

Un-be-liveable… I was having this exact conversation with a car mad kid at school yesterday. I’m 41 & was telling him that during my driving lifetime I’m probably never going to be in a position where petrol isn’t a viable option. He is 15 & I was telling him that he might be in a position where he has to plan where to get petrol from in the same way electric cars had to map out their journeys a few years back.

He told me “it’s alright sir I’ll just dog a fuckin’ huge hole in the ground & have a tank & pump in my back garden”

Maybe an electric conversion can be offered for the Z4?, tons of battery under that big bonnet and a fridge motor in the boot. So don't go wasting your money on the top of the range model... with electricity will come equality!

Stunning car, but it is some strong money for a private sale, plus the location may not help!

Yeah, its a nice car with good spec and low miles but that's retail money IMHO.

As I have said before though, start high as you can always lower the price but not easy to go up :)
