E89 Halo Lights

On babybmw.net there is a current trend to take posts out of context.

I hope that doesn't happen here! :)

Aye Kevin, those long mysterious drives your wife is getting worried about!

Little does she know your becoming part of an elite white club with no coloured cars allowed!

I will light the fire to get this White party started :fuelfire:

Tin can clan? I think your getting our superior quality motors confused with a Mercedes!

Just call it NickM's Klu Klux Car Clan... its his name so we can direct the blame! :poke:

Can I join my black looks white with the road salt....

Is it difficult to fit the new lights btw?

10 min job, although some people say its a little hard twisting the light fitting off, but mine came off pretty easy. If anyone is coming to the London meet, I'll show you how to do it....

I'm assuming these are just slightly bluer/whiter 'normal' bulbs?

What's the difference between these and the $200 Lux ones I've seen mentioned on the US based forums? :| Are they LED based - and is it just they offer a whiter light than these ones you've fitted? Or something else?

Cheers! 8)

Ive been thinking. Ive got some multi coloured 5 w LED downlighters from ebay realised they are 12v and the frist lot had a direct beam, the new gens have a difuser and they are wicked. Got them for the living room and they are remote controled. You can set the colour or get them to go through the colours at different times.

Now how sad would they look

In the living room, I have 3 replaced the 12v halogens and they are fun, set a diferent colour or get them to change for a party. I mean they are bright. The mark 1 have the focust beam so get the LED out of the case and focused to the angles but it did not remember the last setting, but the Mk2 strip it out and you can have any colour just point the remote and it remembers when next power on.

In the house I use a light switch to turn them all on at the same time but the remote can turn individual ones on or different colours would be strange having a red and a green front angel eye.

Just a thought for fun

Phew!! I thought I was thick, ok I am, but I thought really thick!

I am lost about the lengthy post!

Anyways, nick, do you have any DLR daytime pics? Do you have a link for the bulbs?

Buying some new bulbs today, £11.99, a good mod I think, the amber ones are just not right.....

Buying the same ones I had before, called HID Direct, these are the brightest ones they do...

MTEC H8 35W

EBay item number 220422811464

Yeah popped those in about a year ago, they're still going ok. Look great with just the angel eyes illuminated but go yellow when they dim (when the HID's are on). I'm still considering a LUX angel eye type solution.

Just replacing mine, as one of mine went, they still say these are the best plug and play ones out there with a standard fitting.....

Have you found the brighter ones ie Lux anywhere, and how much?

The respected brands are expensive. You can find cheap LED H8's all day long on ebay, like £50... but most people are talking LUX or similar which are over a hundred quid a set. The results however are very good indeed. You've seen the MTEC LEDs in the e89 forum you recently posted on. They're quite good, much whiter and brighter than any bulb, and they don't dim, so when the headlights are on, the halos/angel eyes remain white and don't yellow like bulbs do. Just like the new 3 series.

Mine don't seem to dim on mine, not sure why....even with big lights in, and the ones on E89 Forum still aren't as good as 3 series...

As I have not as yet collected my UDM and have not seen the E89 at night, I am currently unfamiliar with the looks of the angel eyes.

I looked at a couple of E89's on a showroom floor back in 2010 when I had my E38 in for service. Never test drove one either. Just decided while I was here in Iraq to take the plunge and order one because of the great military discount. Probably sounds kind of crazy.

Anyway, reading through this thread (and other posts) I guess my understanding is that the stock lights are somewhat yellow in appearance and folks desire something more toward white or blueish white; correct?

Not just whiter/bluer but also brighter. Here's a comparo pic of the OEM vs MTec. Oem on the left and MTec on the right. It just looks better than stock.

Probably just me, but I prefer the OEM angel eyes! The bright ones like the new 3 Series just get lost from a distance and look like just the normal lights. I also think on my black car the more yellow look of the OEM looks meaner!

Actually some firms are producing them in yellow LED for that reason. I think its easy to get caught up in the 'must mod my car' frenzy, and I'm no exception. I had considered the light change to LED, but they're silly expensive or require too much modification for my taste. I'll spend a bit getting the paintwork back to spiffy levels and then leave well alone, the damn thing is costing me enough in depreciation and fuel/insurance costs to waste any more money on it!
