Hi all,

So, 35i keyless start 2009 car.

Insurance is asking if the car has Thatcham Category Class 1 immobilier!

Anyone know the answer??

Ok - answered this myself.

Had a guy from Adrian Flux on a live chat and he talked to a couple of underwriters on my behalf while I waited.
All UK spec cars sold in the UK after 2007 must have a Thatcham Cat 1 immobiliser fitted.
So now we all know :-)

YAY

Didn't seem to stop them getting stolen.

Bus. partners son's 3 week old brand new Range Rover stolen, one of 7 already taken in local area.
Apparently there is a Rover tracker built in, but son wasn't told how to set it up.

I think if had targeted car i would fit a secret fuel pump cut out switch.

Got a module here that takes a sim card and you can dial it to operate a relay.

Keyless cars especially vulnerable to ‘sniffer in the middle’ attack..

Box of tricks sniffs car keys..they respond with code..then sniffer uses code to open / start car..

Something to be said about old fashioned keys and fobs..

Need a Faraday cage to stop those attacks..and never ever park in a public place…simples.. :tumbleweed:

Yes, used to take out the distributor rotor arm on my MGs in the good old days if I felt the area was a bit dodgy.

if you look at the salvage auctions the majority of range rovers in them are stolen recovered

I tend to use the touch point on the handle to lock the car when in busy car parks to prevent anyone intercepting the signal from the key fob.

Not all models have this facility but very useful. As a backup to the location facility on the BMW App that lets you find your car, I have also hidden an Apple Airpod in the car so I can also track it via my phone.

Doesn't stop it being stolen in the first place but it gives the Plod a chance of finding who stole it providing you can get them interested in the first place

I was also considering the AirPod idea
There are a multitude of places to hide them - might be useful when the car goes off site while being serviced?

Hide one and put the other one on the key fob to put them off the scent!

I have used these before, choose relay option - excellent

Range Rovers are dogs like the new landrovers. Globally ridiculed as unreliable and easy to steal.
I watched a short social media post a while back where two lads in a car did a demonstration following a spanking new range rover, accessed its software via a laptop in their car through the range rovers alarm apparently!! turned off the engine, it rolled to a stop, guy locked the doors, they walked up, unlocked them with the lap top, guy got out, they got in, started the car with the laptop and gone....
My mate Louis bought a breand new top spec landrover a month ago, square ugly thing with lunch boxes on the outside of the back windows. It broke down yesterday, only 200 miles on it. Horn kept going off, and only stopped when you pressed the horn!!!, also immobilised the car. Guys came out from landowner to his place, spent 8 hours on it, no fix and its gone back....
Did you know the V6 Range rovers are a V8 with the back 2 cylinder holes bunged up LMFAO.....

Mine live in a small locked metal box, it blocks the signal completely....

In Bristol they have a compound full of them, most ex-lease around 3 yrs old. No one wants them 9obviously) they just sit there

Do you mean airtag? If so dont bother.
Air Tag is a great idea to find your wallet or similar but they are not a live tracker.
The tag just sits there until an apple device gets close enough and it asks that device to tell apple where it is. So if your car is left in a locked building with no one around you cant see it any way. The apple device has to get quite close as well, less than 10m in reality. less if its behind a wall or door
In addition any airtag travelling with you that does not belong to you will tell you its there. So car thieves know this, they drive a way, wait for the 'hidden' tag to tell them where it is then pull it out and bin it...

I heard that car thieves just use signal boosters near the car on keyless ones. Simple and cheap apparently, unless you put the keys somewhere where the signal can't be picked up.

Although I am a fan of people stealing RRs and writing them off TBH. I hate the bloody things.

Not quite correct.
An airtag continually emits a signal which is picked up by any apple device nearby. If it passes several such devices on its journey then you can track its journey although not always in real time.

The distance is whatever the viable range of bluetooth which can vary but there are rarely instances these days where there is not an apple device of some description nearby for the airtag to log onto.

As for the criminals knowing an airtag is transmitting, it logs onto any apple device but the owner of that device has no way of telling that it has done so. Their device is only being used as a relay and nothing more. (Check out Apple site for confirmation) When you buy an airtag you register it to your device and that is the only device that can track or locate it.

I use it all the time and have tracked my suitcases around airports as large as Dubai and Singapore and onto the plane whilst sitting in the lounge. They work!

I think an "Airtag" attached to the key fob would be a good starting point - then maybe another hidden in the car?
I assume they can be given different names?

Not going to argue the point but that isnt correct, if you dont believe me put a friends airtag in your car, it'll let you know eventually, sometimes hours after the event. Android has to install an app to be informed I believe. My daughter has one in her car keys, every time we go out in her car i get notification that 'an airtag not belonging to me is travelling wiith me"

You are right, in well populated areas they are great but in anything less they are pretty much useless. My Z has one in, its in a garage right by a main road and if I look right now at 12:36 the last time it was 'seen' is 10:31 today. So not great......

I very much doubt an Airtag will be any use.... here is why, we just bought one for the dog.... it’s NOT paired to my phone, after taking her for a walk and getting home my phone alerted me I was tracked by an Airtag did I want to disable it.

So it appears the phone will alert someone if the tag has had a constant connecting and followed them... basically it would alert the thief.
