E89 exhaust tips

Hey all,

My E89 20i exhaust tips are getting quite corroded so looking to clean them up or replace them. If I were to replace them, I had considered trying some different tips, maybe some Akrapovic ones (or rep ones).

Has anyone else done this or something similar? Was it worth it? If so, will these tips fit over the stock ones or do I need to take them off first? What size would I need to get?

Sorry for all the questions, but any help would be appreciated!

These were what I put on before I changed to eisenmann exhaust, cheap reps from eBay, they went off colour pretty quick so beware

Looks nice! Did you have to take off the original tips or did these slide over them?

Mine were welded on unfortunately
Had to cut them off , think on the lower engines some have said they pull off , there is a YouTube video I think , just not how mine was

Ouch, that’s a ballache! I took a look on RealOEM to see if I could get the diameter of the 20i exhaust but couldn’t see it anywhere. Is there anywhere else that might give me the size? Don’t really want to take my tips off if I don’t have to as they look pretty stuck on.

You can reach the pipe behind the added on tip, get a large adjustable and set so it just lightly grips the pipe, then take it out and measure the gap between the jaws.

if the exhaust tips are anything like my 23i then they come off pretty easy... spray WD40 at the rear where it meets the exhaust pipe, I used a bolster and a hammer just on the edge to gently tap it off (took a couple of minutes). I put some cheap tip replacements on (that actually look good) and Im having the old ones polished as there is nothing wrong with them.

I got mine Powder Coated in Black chrome by the same place who did my wheels. They did the pipes for free with my wheels 8)
If you have a wheel refurb place near you, they could probably do the same, just not chrome.
The coating withstands the exhaust heat no problem

I bought two Etech large 55-65mm stainless steel tailpipe trims from Amazon at £12.95 each, they are similar to those shown in the right hand picture posted by Zed Baron, but are longer and project further out of the back of the car, which is what I wanted.

PS On my 2015 2L, the originals were pressed on the box and I removed them with a cold chisel and hammer, without causing them any damage. The new ones are held on with jubilee clips which cannot be seen once they are fitted, unless you crawl under the car. They have been on, for many monthe now and show no sign of movement.

Those look really good. Elegant and 'right'.

I followed a 911 today with the 'Hey, guys, look at the go-faster chrome pots I've put on my exhausts! Wow, check 'em out!' Sadly, a lot of replacement tips look like that. Yours don't.

Anyone know the situation with 35iS tips? I don't mind the shape/size of them I'd just like new/clean ones! I put the MachineMonkey tips on my old E86 and they were great, just twist off and twist on. Are 35iS tips easy to replace?

They look good. Normally when people mess with the exhaust tips they look gash, but yours look good.

After I got them I put on some Gtechniq C5 Wheel armour to protect them - this can also (if I remember) withstand heat up to 300 degrees? It should last up to 2 years 8)
This makes them much easier to keep clean along with the smoother gloss finish. The darker colour hides the exhaust filth too

Ok so quick update:
Took the tips off last night for a clean. Decided to do some measuring then to see if I could work out what size Akras I need. Slight issue though.

With the stock tips on, I measured each tip diameter to be 75mm, with a 5mm gap in between.
This would suggest the max tip outlet size I could feasibly use would be 77.5mm

However, once I took the tips off, I measured the bare exhaust tips to work out what size inlet I need.
I measured each exhaust pipe to be 65mm, with a 15mm gap in between.
This would suggest the max tip outlet size I could feasibly use would be 72.5mm

So either my maths is wrong, or I've list my ability to use a ruler properly - I don't know why these two calculations don't match...Basically what I need to work out is:

• The size of the bare exhaust pipe (to work out what size inlet I need)

• The gap between the two bare exhaust pipes (to work out how much extra wriggle room I have)

My gut is I need to get a 66+mm inlet with either a 72.5mm or 77.5mm outlet, but this doesn't seem right at all.

Honestly, if anyone has any experience with this, any help would be massively appreciated. I don't want to spend loads of money on stuff that won't fit! I'm at my wits end having spent the guts of 2 hours on my back on the driveway last night, and I don't think my back will forgive me if I do it again!

just got my old genuine exhaust tips back from the polishers...
