E89 Engine Choice

Thanks for all your replies.
There is a 2.0 M Sport locally so I might try that first to see how it compares to my current zed.
Finding a 2.3 locally to try is currently proving harder but as there's no rush, I'm happy to wait for one to crop up.
2.8 cars seem pretty rare AUC and I'm not sure I want to go as big as 3.0 or 3.5..... well, I do but I think running costs might be prohibitive for me!
It seems the bottom line is, what suits one person might not suit the next so best I start looking at (and driving!) all the options.
Thanks again for your help.
Andy

If you plan on making a day trip to check out a few models, you might want to pay a visit to Syntner in Sunningdale, Berks. They have loads of stock across the e89 range, so you would be able to compare engines. There are plenty of 20 and 23i models, but also a 30 and a 35.

Good luck with your search.

Nowt wrong with a focus - superb car. The Mk I rewrote the rule book for front drivers.....

I quite like the new Focus but I can't get on with Ford interiors, they always look pretty awful.

Tim.

That was the thing sat in an escort and then a focus the interior was a huge improvement - Audi actually poached the designer from ford on the basis of his interior design....

I had the 1.6 three door and it really did hold the road - best front driver ive driven.....

but it had three year gremlins - things really started to go wrong on it after three years.

Just to add my 2 pence....

I have the 1.8 and after 1500 miles its performance has improved greatly (also I have got used to going back to a manual so adapted my driving style)

I test drove a few z4's and IMO it feels faster than the 2.5 (2.3) auto which I had a bit of time with and was buying before I lost my job.

True its not as fast as a the very big engines but its certainly fast enough for me and gives a nice bit of noise.

It also feels faster than the 2.0 auto I drove - it will be as the autos are slower with BMW compared to VW where the DSG actually gives you a performance improvement
