There are channels either side of the boot when open.

They have drainage holes.

You can remove the plastic trim easily to get access and give them a clean out.

Correct. The channels divert water straight into the boot and rear lights. That's why there is a big lump of foam around the hydraulic roof pump...to soak it all up! It's not there for show!
