E89 Comfort Access Retrofit

Thread update: Custom Wiring Loom and Key arrived. I wasn't pressing for quick delivery and I'm thankful that I could find an expert to do it. All parts here -- now to plan the work and coding... and re-read the experiences of others... 3x  :P

Brave man…I admire your desire to go where no man (well maybe someone) has gone before…

If nobody ever pushed boundaries we wouldn't have discovered America!

Good luck Christopher.

I actually de-specced comfort access on my M to avoid it being stolen. The same on the Porsche, I just don’t want it but each to their own.

Exactly this. Very sensible decision.

All of my cars have keyless entry and keyless start... except for this one... and none of them are less than 8 years old. it's prevalent to have a keyless start here, and there's not a lot of car theft in general --- but I don't live in a city, much less a big city. I'd venture that many people don't even lock doors if the car is on their property or at a local business.

Looks like my Zed is going to be down for retrofitting this fall. Already starting on hydraulic/wire loom replacement, and while I'm down there... I'll restart this CA retrofit.

I now have a working CA Key registered to my VIN, my VIN modified with $322, all antennae, the Passive GO module, two color-matched CA door handles, and CA door wire harnesses, and a custom CA wiring loom for the E89. Now I just need some re-learning what I knew a year ago when I planned this work. :?

Good luck…have you checked the handles for full functionality?

No -- but they were pulled from a California car that was wrecked in a head-on collision without door damage. How would I check them before installation?

Sadly afaik you can’t..have to apply power and see if they draw excess current..

So, the door panel and sound shroud are off. I figured out the puzzle box combo to remove the outside door handle. (crazy)... I have removed the entire wire harness, except for the run that goes to the outside handle...

I'm stuck there for the night until I mull it over some more. With a borescope, I can see that the wire that runs to the outside handle is attached to the outside of the door. I'm trying to discover a way to remove that and replace it with the CA door wire harness without removing the window.
I'll take more pictures to improve the view -- but putting it to bed this evening.

btw.. Thanks Dave -- You always seem to hit my YouTube when I need to remember how to do something with minimal breakage.

Ah well I’d have hoped that the door had the full wire option for CA ore-fitted..

Yeah, follow my advice and not what I did  No ill effects from bending the door trim piece, still looks OK :D

Doesn't even have the wiring for the puddle lights, so I had to run new wires for that when I did mine :x

Ah so..it seems that the E89 harness is pretty much uniquely made for each car with its options.. :tumbleweed:

They are, but they are easy to find from an eBay wreck. I picked up the right side for only $35 and the left side for $50. Mine are from a Philly 2016 Valencia Orange 35is. You have to look up the VIN in advance to ensure you see the 322 Comfort Access.

I will remove the H-brace when I get time this week and see if it gives me the space to reach up and access those wire harness attachment points. The window is currently up, which may help get it out of the way. Removing the window will be a real :headbang: if it turns out that's the required step. I could yank and pull, but I need to be able to get the replacement secured so it doesn't impact the window operation. And if I'm lucky, resell the existing wire harness for the same $$ on Ebay.

The outside handle was amazingly easy to remove once I understood the concept and could see the hook point with the borescope. Thankfully the carrier is the same for both CA and non-CA, so I won't have to mess with all of those physical locking attachments.

Noted…well done…my right door handle popped of within 20 seconds of messing around….the left took about an hour + :headbang:

Sometimes it's just the confidence to know that pulling hard is the correct method... which is priceless knowledge -- and which way to pull!

Also discovered -- the BMW replacement wire harness appears to be a single part numbers for driver (61129232415) and passenger (61129232423). This $276 part includes the CA and Light package connectors, even if not needed - if you can find it in inventory somewhere.
