I thought you needed smarttop to operate the mirrors with the key fob.

Nope folding mirrors was a common option on UK Z4s
I know I have them. From what I have read they cannot be operated by the key fob (remote control). Are you saying they can be operated with the key fob?
Yes, but I had to code mine using Carly to be able to do so.

That clears that up then. :D Factory spec = no folding mirrors by key fob. Gotta use Carly or some other external programming device to get it to work. I have folding mirrors on both my cars but have to press the button on the armrest. I never use them. I guess if you parked on a narrow street they would be useful.

They can be programmed to fold when locking, I think there are 3 options for the length of time the fob is held down or to fold with single short press when locking
Hi Chippie, programmed by what? A setting in iDrive or an external "programmer" such as Carly?

I used a laptop and a program called NCS Expert to activate the settings in control modules
Here’s a link to a YouTube video on coding the mirrors to fold, it’s not an E89 but the process is the same

Not true..when I collected my 2012 MY car from a BMW main dealer in 2017 it worked on the button as described..

Highly unlikely that a BMW dealer would have coded a car in a non standard OE supplied format.

What I do understand is that some cars that were ‘not fitted’ with folding mirrors were just coded out which may explain things.

Similar things were done around extended Bluetooth support and some other issues...like the power levels between 18i 20i 28i on N20 models..

Looking through the user manual I can't see any reference to working the mirrors from the key fob. Maybe your car is a one off. :D

Have a feeling it might be a comfort access option, either way I'm annoyed I couldn't get it to work

I have folding mirrors so checked mine this morning with the Bimmercode app. There are different items in "Car Access System" and "Footwell module". All are checked as active, still not working. Automatic tilt when reversing is OK, about the closing it interestingly says "may not work under certain circumstances". What could they be.... :?

Is that specifically for Z4 e89?

Nope generic behaviour..all BMWs are built from common parts to common architectures at a point in time..

The specific behaviour of a specific module in a specific car of a then specific model range is governed by three things

Revision level of hardware...for example sometimes what were two boxes get integrated into one box but systems wise they are treated as discrete systems even though they are now in one box

Revision level of firmware

Coding options for that revision of firmware which itself is dependent on the hardware

So folding mirrors has existed on BMWs for a loooonnngggg time..

BMW marketing / national market compliance dictates that sometimes the box doesn’t exist, the firmware is not the right level even though the box does exist and then some coding options are perceived preferences by the manufacturer..

Finally not every feature in every bmw car is documented...

So all that gives you plenty of room for variation and ambiguity..

Hope that makes sense..

My Z4 has electric folding door mirrors but as standard they don't fold with the key fob. This functionality has to be coded in. I used Carista to do it, there is a thread about it on here somewhere.

Do you have heated mirrors, I found the following on the Carly site. Not sure I have that so that's why nothing I do in Bimmercode has any effect.

*****
Comfort folding for sideview mirrors
• on
• off
This function requires an installed LIN-Bus (usually installed with mirror heating). When holding the lock/unlock button on the remote the sideview mirrors automatically fold/unfold. May need additional coding of the ‘CAS’ module. (codable in FRM)
*****

Edit: The mirrors do have a heating element. So far the tilt on reverse is OK, I also found that when I old the mirrors with the switch, if I drive away as soon as I hit 40kmh the mirrors automatically move out. So probably I'm missing something in the coding list? Hope it's not in "expert", don't fancy learning German :)

The fold out at 40 kph is standard in many markets..certainly North America..

Mirrors themselves came as heated and heated / dipping ie two options

Yes I have heated mirrors. I too tried first with Bimmercode and I couldn't code folding mirrors with it, I contacted Bimmercode support and they said it couldn't be done. I next tried Carista and still couldn't code the mirrors to fold but when I contacted Carista support they put me on a Beta program from where I was able to code the mirrors to fold with the key remote. Even with the Carista beta program there is a sequence of codings that have to be done to get it to work. If you do a search on this forum for Carista and or folding mirrors you should be able to find the post where I put all the necessary codings required.

I had the same issue with, and had to pay to get it coded in outside the Bimmercode app. It wasn't straightforward either, amd the guy tried a number of "options" before getting it to work.
