e89 Carly fault codes - what to worry about?

Hi all,

I have recently purchased a 2010 e89 and I'm loving it! The only issue was a roof warning light, which with the help of this forum I suspected was a hall sensor problem. I ran a diagnostics report with the Carly app just to double check and I got 11 faults - I am wondering how much to worry about this! Should a car have 0 faults? Or is it natural to have some faults which you can ignore?

Hi Neel

As you have recently purchased the car, and don’t know what may have been addressed but not cleared, it might be an idea to write all of the codes and info down before clearing them and seeing which ones come back before delving too deep into sorting them out.

That's quite a mixed bag OP!
If you haven't already cleared those codes I'd suggest that would be your first option.

I find that if I disconnect the battery on my E85 for any length of time, then reconnect and do a scan that I get all sorts of spurious looking codes that were not there before. If you've just bought it and it's been sitting on a garage forecourt or such for any length of time with a slowly degrading battery this creates a risk for dodgy codes in my experieince.

The last time I did it after the car was standing for 2 months I got codes for misfire on 2 cylinders, which I never had before. But getting the battery back up to tiptop condition then scanning again brought back the handful of codes that have been there for a while.
 
You don't normally want to see any trouble codes. Agree that it makes sense to clear these first, then see after about a week of driving which are back. Some likely will as your description lists their status as 'present'. The ones about the defective lights are easy enough to check. My guess is you have two or three bad sensors and/or wiring connections.
I just got my car myself last week and, after scanning with the Foxwell 520, found three codes, none present. I expect they won't return. Depending on the problem, you may decide fixing some is not necessary.

Clearing the codes sounds like a smart idea - Given that my lights seem fine I have a feeling these are old codes, possibly due to a disconnected battery or something similar.

When my roof went faulty had a load of hall sensor error codes, non were faulty, it was a pump motor relay fault. Also some abs, never had any problems. Perhaps when changing brake pads it threw up some codes and as you say disconnecting the battery.
I cancelled all mine and will check again in a few months.
I have the Foxwell 520, seems it can store data and hopefully save to computer.
 
Hi, frankly if that was all the codes generated for some time then it’s not that bad...I find that you get random/spurious errors over time..I’ve cleared probably 15 fault codes when I got Carly...I check every now and again and I get the occasional soft error popping up..the problem with ECU logging is it does seem to generate large number of usually temporary errors..

A lot of your errors seem to come from abusing the roof mechanism/light bulbs..

As the others have said best thing is to note them down, clear them, then monitor for any that regularly return...

The ECU works out what the serious errors are and generates a fault light on the dash display..
