E89 boot luggage rack

Only downsides I can see (other than it kinda spoils the look of the car) is that your rear view mirror is null and void.
Personally I would rather just travel with less stuff.
But needs must.

I agree but you do have wing mirrors and/or travel faster..

It’s the 16 day trip two up to the Pyrenees in 10 hotels is the problem…not enough time to do any washing plus on the go most of the time..

You could take the Volvo XC70 and that would solve the luggage issue but…..

After testing the rack bouncing around the Kyles of Bute I noticed one of the suction cups was losing pressure faster than the other two.

It never lost grip but I found it unsettling.



Chatting with the supplier we did various tricks like resting the rubber feet in boiling water for 30 seconds but to no avail.

In the end they sent a new cup which I've now fitted.

Also I adjusted the centre foot from its most rearward position on the rack to the forward postion.

This gives a more even fit and means the centre one is not trying to force the rack up on the other two feet.

I've ordered a pair of flatter bags to fit the rack too.

One thing I'm not happy about is, due to the curvature of the boot, the screws are held at angles and rely on overly large holes in the tubing to accomodate the curvature.

Not sure how to solve it..but I'm working on it.

Ron that would be possible, it would need the holes to be widened out further initially..I'll think about it thnx

I motored the roof with the bag attached just to see how it behaved but going forward I’ll adopt a procedure of mounting and unmounting the bag before operating the roof.

I want to be there when you're tired at the end of a day cruising with the roof down and the heavens open!
Watching you clambering out, removing the bag, raising the roof, refitting the bag, all the while suffering the abuse of an increasing wet wife and praying the lights don't change!

As commander I’d be authorised to do whatever was necessary for the safety of the crew (me).

So I’d just motor the roof end off…

Out of interest I’ve motored the roof with the rack loaded with twice it’s rated load.

No obvious issues…I’d guess if I did it 100s of times maybe there would be an issue..

The rack can be mounted either way round..the recommendation from the supplier was to mount it with the hoop closer to the seats..most of the pictures of E89s show it that way ..here is a snippet of the said conversation….

Sorry to hear about your issues/concerns this is not common. Never had the feedback re a spacer before. We have 30mm ones ?

Most E89 customers seem to mount it with the hoop near the cabin, as per attached have you tried it that way ?

1. Leave the screws very loose push down lightly above the cup on the frame to compress it a little and pump then tighten, they are designed to rotate to curve to the boot lid as you say.

2. The cups are certified to hold vacuum for 6 hours so 6-8 is normal. You would not drive for more than 2-3 hours so as per the instructions when you stop take a look and re pump if needed. They can hold 10-12 no problem as you say its all about the fit and making sure the surface is damp as this seals the microscopic undulations in the paint surface and provides a better seal. I suspect the 6-8 hour cup has a small leak in the edge compared to other two. The atmosphere is constantly trying to undo the cups.

THought I'd post an update on the suction mounted rack and associated luggage.

After 2,700 miles over all sorts of twists, turns, bumps and occasional very high speeds I'm pleased and relieved at how everything worked.

The big breakthrough was finding some lightweight cabin luggage that was equipped with straps for holding items externally to the bag..these straps made it very easy to secure the bags to the racks without additional straps..

Later I realised if I cross strapped the bags it would the secure them laterally very well.

A good point was that it was pretty quick and easy to remove the bags and dismount the rack and store them all in the passenger footwell and seat if you you were parked up and concerned about security.

There is obviously a centre blind spot but the wing mirrors were clear..had a shock when lookig over my shoulder to see something big and yellow very close..kept thinking it was another car in my blind spot!

Turns out the same sucker system is used to hold push bikes on roof racks..so providing you follow the advice all seems ok.

The extra 40-50 litres of space, which is easily carried and managed should allow almost any long distance mission in an E89 for 2 people, roof down all the way!
