E89 boot luggage rack

Following on from the G29 discussion about external storage, I decided to press the button on a luggage rack for my E89.

Its a version that use vacuum suckers to hold it to the boot.

Car is having a pre-hooning check prior to a couple of runs so no pictures yet of the rack on the car.

I'll take it out for a shake down (pun) run this weekend.

The build quality and design seem very good. A ot of thought has been put into the suction design and dire and detailed instructions are supplied.

ie only use for a maximum of a day..check the vacuum sensors regularly..clean and wet the boot lid..remove overnight..put protective green covers on the feet when not in use..

I bought a 70l super water proof bag to sit on it along with some mega rated tie downs.

As you can see the bag doesn't make full use of the rack..maybe not a bad thing..

The suckers have a pump valve that evacuates the air and also show a red line if vacuum insufficient..

Indicators not valid above 5,000 ft..

A slight aside but plenty of room on there to mount a handlebar mount or suchlike for a GoPro etc?

Rack fitted..trial fitment of bag…

Due to the curved boot lid the three suction cups do sit at an angle and are not right angle flush..so the screws need to be loosened then tightened up once fitted..

Off to the Kyles of Bute now for a test run..

That’s looks a descent piece of kit , and the 70ltr bag must double the boot space with the roof down, I just think the bag looks a little too top heavy, perhaps a longer, lower bag would look better and probably have less wind resistant/drag, obviously it would also have to be yellow and have a black stripe

Yes hindsight is great…I’ll see if I can find a wider, flatter, lower version..having said that the boot is in a low pressure area at speed so will probably be sucked forward

Yeah, thats an accident waiting to happen. I am guessing you get no warning if one or more of the cups has a tiny suction leak (which is very possible) and the whole thing rips off 50 miles down the road!!

Each suction gap has a visible vacuum loss sensor

Quick eye ball when you get in n out is all it needs

You can prime any loss of suction via the built in pump in each unit

Total load can be held by just one cup

So I think your comments are assumption rude and inaccurate

I like warning if the suction pressure is not sorted.
You can still operate the roof with it on? (Obviously without the bag on it).

Any paint markings or dents from the suction cup?

i think this is great idea , i love the look of it ..... im planning some longer trips this year so this would be super handy, i would recommend PPF covering the top of the deck lid to avoid scratches etc.

So my experiences so far are…

The inbuilt pump and pressure warning is great and makes a precautionary check and re-pump if required easy.

Due to the complex shape of the boot lid you need to have a bit of slack in the screws that hold the suckers to the frame to accommodate the curves. Initially then remove any slack afterwards.

Need good polish level or PPF for a good seal..rear cup lost pressure over about 8 hours due to combination of slightly Matt finish of the boot paint in that area and cup alignment.

You are not allowed to keep it permanently mounted..I guess for paint reasons and to keep the cups in good condition. Can’t see any paint impact.

I’ll look for a waterproof bag that takes advantage of the surface area of the rack with a bit lower height.

I motored the roof with the bag attached just to see how it behaved but going forward I’ll adopt a procedure of mounting and unmounting the bag before operating the roof.

I can’t see other options that don’t either risk damaging paintwork edges or scuffing the lid if your preparation is not perfect..

Only downsides I can see (other than it kinda spoils the look of the car) is that your rear view mirror is null and void.
Personally I would rather just travel with less stuff.
But needs must.
