E89 35is daylight running light fault

Just had my car MOTd and the mech says i have a daylight running light fault.
My reply was "well i didn`t have one this morning when i dropped it off for it`s test".

Strange thing is he still passed it even though the passenger side angel eyes flash like an indicator.
I`ve had a poke around, but can`t find anything loose so am a bit stuck now, so was hoping one of you nice guys might be able to point me in the right direction.
Been into the lighting control and disabled them for now as the sensor is driving me nuts every time it pings me.

Does the display come up with any errors, either on I drive or just the main display via the indicator stalk.

Yes 2 error messages, 1 on the main display over the sat nav display and the second is a large bulb image in the centre display between the clocks.

What year is the car?

Pre-facelift models have halogen DRL bulbs whereas post-facelift are LED. The facelift was around March 2013, the easiest way to tell if the indicators on the wings of the car, if they are chrome then it's a facelift model.

If it's pre-facelift the previous owner could have installed after-market LED bulbs which can cause the problems you are having. Try swapping the bulbs over from passenger to drivers side and see if the fault follows the bulb.

If it's LCI then I'm guessing it's still within warranty so best to take it to the dealer. I imagine faults with the LED style lights will be more costly as the fault will likely be on the circuit board within the light unit.

Year is 2011 60 plate so is now 4yr old this week, i`ve not owned it too long and am still learning what does what, so i may need help swapping stuff about, but at a glance they appear to be led fittings.

They should dim when the lights are on, and be at full brightness with the light switch set to '0'. Check if yours do, as I think the cheaper LEDs can't DIM so may start flashing.

New development............just been outside for a mess and i can clearly still see light (although flickering) from the faulty lamp even when it turns it`s self off and also they do NOT appear as i said before to be LEDs. Does this mean i have a single bulb controlling the ring of light (slightly pissed now so may pass out shortly).
PS i can`t tell if they dim or not.

I have just replaced my DRL bulbs from Halogen to LED, last weekend.

I posted up some photos and a description on how I did it.

Each side of the car has two halo rings, this is lit by by one bulb, which essentially houses itself in the inner lens, if you look at the car from the front, the two outside lenses are for the xenon bulbs and the inner ones are where the halo bulbs are located.

Have a look at my photos in Angel eyes to DRL.

On that year car, the DRL lights are a standard h8 bulb (about a fiver from Halfords). Easiest thing is to put a new bulb in it & see if fixed.

No fancy control circuits to worry about, it's just a bog standard bulb. I would recommend changing both sides at the same time, as they are bound to look wonky if you just change out the 1.

Easy to see the difference between LED & standard halogens - the LED later versions are pure white, before the facelift they look a bit yellowy in comparison to your main lights.

Problem solved, well half of it i suppose.
I discover that the previous owner has retro fitted LEDs instead of the standard H8s, quick trip to Halfords and i have a lovely yellow DLR 1 side and a sparkly bright led on the other side.
I now see why most of you are fitting leds, boy what a difference.

My point to all of this is a big thanks to all that have contributed to my post, being new to BMW previously a CLK man i have found the 2 cars to be chalk and cheese and not sure what to pull apart to fix my problem.
Cheers again

I have Mtec H8 bulbs fitted to mine, they are much whiter than stock but will dim back to an orange hue when the main lights are turned on. This can be fixed with coding so that the bulbs run at the full 13V at all times but unless you're comfortable making coding changes to your car it's best to leave it be.

If you decide to buy some more LED H8 replacements make sure you get some reputable ones. Cheap ones from eBay can overheat and fail quite quickly.
