E89 35i DCT gearbox service?

Hi all,

I've heard I should probably get the DCT box serviced. I think there was an oil pan leak and the pan was replaced around 40K miles ago.

So should I be getting it serviced, fluid change, filter etc sometime soon?
If so, where? I've called a few places, no BMW garage seems to want to know and apparently I need an independent BMW tech.

I live in Buckinghamshire so preferably somewhere relatively close for suggestions please.

Thanks :)

If they replaced the pan then they also replaced the fluid and ran the adaptation procedure. No need to get it done again after only 40k.

Yes, I've heard the same thing. Every six months/5,000 miles.

If you don't, the box is very expensive to replace.

Have you got extended warranty?

Don't forget the oil change every week/200 miles :poke:

Are you trolling? lol
He must have moved on to gearboxes from tyres and wheels :)

Not trolling, sunnydays. Just taking the mickey.
You’ve heard the phrase ‘Cry wolf’ right Buster..?
Yes, John, but I've had my DCT repaired already.
Well, the leaking sump plate, anyway. That said, the box itself has a reputation for longevity. But nothing's un-buster-ble*. :)

*Ouch.

Don’t suppose they commented on the condition of the oil out of interest did they..? How many miles had your car got on when it had the gasket changed?

No, they didn't comment on the oil and the weeping gasket is, as you know, a common fault.

Best of all, the BMW DCT itself doesn't, to the best of my knowledge, have any service requirements.

What is the 'adaptation procedure'?

When major work like a fluid or hardware change is done on an automatic gearbox they have to reset the adaptations. These are values which are used in the TCU for the shift procedures and are often learned by the gearbox over its lifespan. I expect the most important values are ones that keep track of the clutch pack wear and oil lubricity.

Aaaah yes, I have heard that the boxes adapt to the users driving style.
Thanks for the info, is a regular G-Box service recommended?

It's not really adapting to the users driving style, I think that's a myth. The adaptations are more focused around re-homing the clutch plates based on wear and also working out how much time and oil pressure is needed for engagements.
